Rafael Nadal revels in the instant history of 'a flawless Roland Garros'

Rafael Nadal revels in the instant history of 'a flawless Roland Garros'”

Rafael Nadal won his record 10th French Open title by dominating 2015 champion Stan Wawrinka 6-2, 6-3, 6-1 in today's final.

Nadal demolishes Wawrinka to win his 10th French Open ♦ takes his Grand Slam tally to 15, three behind Federer Rafael Nadal said it was "impossible" to describe his emotions after demolishing Stan Wawrinka on Sunday to claim a record 10th French Open title.

Sunday's win is Nadal's 15th career grand slam title to tie him with second-placed Pete Sampras on the all-time men's tennis leader board. "That's for sure. But not only here", said Wawrinka, who lost for the first time in four Grand Slam finals.

Nadal, who has now closed back to within three of Federer's all-time record with a 15th slam title, said in halting French: "It's truly incredible".

It was also his first major since winning the 2014 French Open, and the third time he's triumphed in Paris without dropping a set. It was his 18th crown.

Wawrinka at least halted the run at seven games but there was no hint of the match turning at this point, as the women's final had on Saturday.

But again, when I enter the court, I enjoy it and I appreciate to be in the final of Grand Slam here in French Open.

"It's hard to describe how I'm feeling; all I can say is "thank you". "The adrenaline and nerves I feel on this court I can't describe. And second, all the effort I have been doing [in the] last few weeks to get to my best level again, to get some confidence again, and to win all those matches ... some tough matches".

Nadal was unable to convert four break points in the fourth game. So when confronted with the first break point for either man, 10 minutes in, he solved the predicament this way: service victor at 107 miles per hour (173 kph), ace at 117 miles per hour (189 kph), service victor at 120 miles per hour (194 kph). I (told) him: 'It's hard for you.

"To play Rafa on clay, in (the) French Open, in a final is probably the biggest challenge you can have in tennis".

After his success at Roland Garros, Nadal climbed to second in the rankings, cutting the gap on Andy Murray to just 2605 points.

"But there is not much to talk about the match". A matter of minutes later Wawrinka wafted a forehand long to hand Nadal a second break of serve and the opening set. I come back and see people I have a good relationship with and it's very special.

Wawrinka added his congratulations, saying: "Nothing to say about today, you were too good".

The final score read 6-2, 6-3, 6-2 in the Spaniard's favour, as he literally sprinted his way to a mind-boggling 10th Roland Garros title.

The Swiss had never lost a final at a major, while Nadal has not lost in 10 Roland Garros finals.

Rafael Nadal falls to the court after winning his 10th French Open title.

"Last year", Nadal said, "was not an easy one".

"My uncle has been coaching me since I was three".
