Russian Federation condemns United States downing of Syrian warplane

The announcement comes as tensions escalate following the United States downing of a Syrian military jet near Raqqa yesterday. Russian Federation also threatened to target any aircraft flown by American and its allies over Syria. Iran fires missiles into Syria.

The previous Conservative government first deployed Aurora surveillance planes, a Polaris air-to-air refueller and six CF-18 fighter jets to participate in the US -led air campaign against ISIL in October 2014.

As Syria's complex war ramps up, the Trump administration is scrambling to tamp down tensions and avoid open hostilities with the Russians. It's an effort made more complicated by the increasingly messy battlefield in the Arab country, which includes deepening Iranian involvement - its first missile foray into Syria occurred Sunday - and an ongoing probe in the United States into Russian meddling in the presidential election.

The downing of the warplane - the first time in the six-year conflict that the USA has shot down a Syrian jet - came amid another first: Iran fired several ballistic missiles Sunday night at IS positions in eastern Syria in what it said was a message to archrival Saudi Arabia and the United States.

"The worst thing any of us could do right now is address this with hyperbole", Dunford said.

Moscow has condemned the USA downing of the Syrian government fighter jet after it dropped bombs nears US partner forces.

Attempts to warn the plane away using an emergency radio frequency failed, the US Central Command said. SDF forces are backed by the US-led coalition fighting ISIS.

The government says that later this year it will send a C-130 cargo plane to the region to help transport members of the coalition and their equipment. Russian Federation called it a "cynical" violation of the Arab country's sovereignty.

"Any aircraft, including planes and drones of the worldwide coalition, detected in the operation areas west of the Euphrates River by the Russian air forces will be followed by Russian ground-based air defense and air defense aircraft as air targets", the ministry said.

Marine General Joseph Dunford, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said there was still communications between a U.S. air operations center in Qatar and Russian forces on the ground in Syria but added: "We'll work diplomatically and military in the coming hours to reestablish deconfliction".

"We'll work diplomatically and military in the coming hours to reestablish deconfliction", Dunford said at a news conference, adding, that the contacts between Russian forces in Syria and a United States air operations center in Qatar were still open as of Monday morning.

"I'm also confident that our forces have the capability to take care of themselves", said Dunford.

The immediate effect on the USA -led campaign against IS is unclear.

But while National Defence says it is monitoring the situation, it otherwise wouldn't comment Monday on where the Canadian planes have been flying in Syria and whether they are in any increased risk of danger.

"We are going to make sure that we have the right aircraft in the right places", he said, noting that some aircraft may have to avoid "high-threat" areas.

The Islamic State group did not immediately acknowledge the attack. The U.S. also has about 1,000 troops on the ground in Syria advising local fighters.

Syria's army disputed the account, saying its plane was hit while "conducting a mission against the terrorist Islamic State group".

"I think that it was just that the regime engaged in a provocation and then a lower-rung USA commander responded in self-defence", he said of Sunday's incident. The Russians appear to want to avoid further US targeting of Syrian warplanes or ground troops that have come under USA attack in eastern Syria recently. Russia's deputy foreign minister Sergei Ryabkov called it a "continuation of America's line to disregard the norms of worldwide law", adding: "What is this if not an act of aggression?"

"The Russians clearly are doing a lot of sabre rattling right now, but the reality is that the United States has significantly superior air power in the region, and it would be extremely foolish for the Russians to pick a fight with the United States in Syria", said Nile Gardiner, an worldwide affairs expert at the Heritage Foundation think tank.
