Shooting injures 2 girls at school playground in Chicago

It's unclear who is responsible for the shooting, but sources said police have a "person of interest" in custody. It was believed to be stolen.

The identities of the two boys were not released because they're juveniles.

Two young girls were shot on an elementary school playground as violence across Chicago continues to spike.

She said two girls were hit, and the little girl fell.

Police have since arrested 18-year-old Raekwon Hudson and two others, both 17.

The 7-year-old was shot in the thigh and the older girl was shot in the hand, police spokesman Larry Langford said.

They were taken in serious condition to Comer Children's Hospital, the Chicago Tribune reported. Students who had been suspended from the school were trying to attend the picnic. "Because it's not normal", Johnson said. The older students ran back to the picnic and the gunfire followed them.

The former students were standing on a nearby corner when shots were fired from a vehicle.

Police say the victims were unintended targets, and that the shooter or shooters were inside a vehicle.

Stephaney Branch, Khia's mother, said she felt "disbelief, but not surprise", and was "seriously looking into home schooling".

"This makes me sick", Johnson said. It is rare for students to be shot on a school campus, Chicago Public Schools CEO Forrest Claypool said.

But Claypool added that, "Despite this incident, the schools are still the safest place that children can be".

The shooting occurred at Warren Elementary School in the 9200 block of South Jeffery Avenue, police said. "This was a highly unusual situation".

The shooting happened around 1:45 p.m.
