Tight Congressional Race In Georgia

The race between Republican Karen Handel and Democrat Jon Ossoff is seen as a significant political test for the new Trump Administration.

But if Handel loses, it will be a clear warning sign to House Republicans facing tough races in other suburban districts across the country, many of them among the 23 GOP-held seats where Trump trailed Clinton in 2016. But considering its impact elsewhere, one side will get its money's worth.

Handel spokesperson Kate Constantini said the ad was "disturbing and disgusting" in a statement released on Saturday.

Polls have given Ossoff a narrow lead over Handel, a former Georgia secretary of state, but that's tightened in recent weeks, and since there's no party registration in Georgia, it's hard to model turnout in a late June runoff that's already defied turnout expectations for a special election.

The district has been controlled by Republicans since 1979, but the run-off election is neck-and-neck.

If Democrat Jon Ossoff holds his narrow polling lead and wins this traditionally red district, his party will find it easier to raise money and recruit high-quality candidates.

The ad is paid for by Principled Leadership Fund, a Super PAC from Tallahassee, FL.

The local TV station had to add an extra evening news broadcast to accommodate all the ads.

That appears to have little to do with where the candidates stand on financial regulation: If the subject has even surfaced in the race, I couldn't find evidence of it.

The shooting of Republican congressman Steve Scalise - who remains hospitalized in serious condition after being shot in the hip - last Wednesday in Washington however has cast a shadow over the Georgia race.

And since the primary, Ossoff has almost sounded like a Republican - prompting former Republican Gov. Sonny Perdue, stumping for Handel, to quip that Democrats picked Ossoff out of central casting for looking and sounding good, "and they've taught him a few Republican buzzwords". Would they vote for Ossoff?

"She wants to forward the Trump agenda", Roberts said.

Ossoff lives in Atlanta, south of the suburban district.

Uma Palam Pulendran, 47, from Johns Creek, came out on Monday afternoon, too.

To win, Ossoff will need something approaching presidential-level turnout from Democratic base voters - and African-Americans are a crucial component of that base.

She stopped at every table to remind customers to vote.

Portions of Fulton, Cobb and DeKalb counties are included in the 6th Congressional District.

"There are more of us than we thought", said Tricia Gephardt, an Ossoff volunteer.

Most immediately, the very public process playing out in Georgia could go a long way toward determining the fate of what has been an unusually private one up on Capitol Hill: The effort by Senate Republican leaders and some handpicked lieutenants to craft a health-care overhaul behind closed doors.

Another Handel supporter at the Old Hickory House is hopeful, but not completely confident, that the GOP nominee will win.

"I can't even think about the politics of it". She wasn't sure how many people were given those directions.

And he's been surprised at how Ossoff has caught on.

"I hope that's enough", Ayres said. After all, 71 incumbent Republicans sit in districts that are - per the Cook Political Report's partisan voter index - less GOP-leaning than Georgia's 6th District.

Even watching Ossoff push Handel to the limit here would give those incumbents pause.

Asper told CNN Ossoff worries her because of his lack of experience at 30 years old.

An Ossoff win would be a proof point suggesting that Democrats are on the right track.
