Trump lawyer says president not informed he is under investigation

President Donald Trump's personal lawyer said on Sunday that Trump is not under investigation in the probe into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. presidential race, a statement that appeared to contradict a comment Trump himself made on Twitter last week.

The president's earlier tweet, which appeared to term the investigation as a "witch hunt" was not directly in response to any queries regarding the same put to him, said the attorney.

On June 16, the president dismissed the investigation as a "witch hunt", and appeared to admit that he was being investigated for firing former FBI Director James Comey by the very man who told him to fire Comey, according to The Washington Post.

Here's what you need to know.

Marines open the door of the White House in Washington, Monday, June 19, 2017, in preparation of the arrival of Panamanian President Juan Carlos Varela to meet with President Donald Trump.

On Fox News Sunday, Sekulow seemed to confirm, as well as deny an investigation, as he defended Trump's decision to fire Comey.

President Donald Trump's son-in-law and senior adviser may be getting new legal representation as the special counsel investigation into Russia's election meddling heats up.

"He's being investigated for taking the action that the attorney general and deputy attorney general recommended him to take, by the agency who recommended the terminations". The source said investigators have sought information from Richard Ledgett, who recently retired as deputy NSA director and, the source said, had written a memo documenting an attempt from Trump urging Rogers to tamp down on the FBI's Russian Federation investigation.

"We're in uncharted waters in all kinds of ways", said Robert Ray, who succeeded Ken Starr as independent counsel in the investigation of various Bill Clinton scandals.

SEKULOW: Well, look, I - I can't imagine the scenario where the president would - would not be aware of it.

This week we could finally learn if there are recordings of the President's private conversations with Comey at the White House. The top attorney also maintained that there can not be any investigation into Trump's firing of FBI Director James Comey because the president had full constitutional authority to oust the agency head.

Other supporters of the president took to the Sunday shows to defend the intentions behind his tweet.

"There is not an investigation of the President of the United States, period". "So that tweet takes, let's say, 15 seconds", Sekulow said on NBC. What journalists focused on like a laser on was the first four words of the president's tweet: "I am being investigated". "He's been a fighter his whole life", former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said on ABC's "This Week". Mueller operates with day-to-day independence of Rosenstein, but Rosenstein still oversees how the investigation is funded. When asked if the President needs to be involved in the fight even if he has a well-rounded legal team, Jay responded by saying, "The President has had the most effective use of social media in an election in anytime we've ever seen in history".
