Turkish parliament approves bill to deploy troops in Qatar”

Saudi Arabia said that Qatar's "embrace of various terrorist and sectarian groups aimed at destabilizing the region", including the factions of the Islamic State supported by Iran, lead to the severing of diplomatic ties.

The three countries, plus Egypt and the Maldives, have cut ties with Doha over what they call Qatar's support for terrorism.

Lawmakers from Erdogan's ruling AK Party and the nationalist opposition MHP were the main backers of the bill that allows troops to be deployed to Turkey's base in Qatar, but the main opposition CHP party said the timing sent the wrong message.

According to the plan, Turkish army will also be on a mission of training and advising Qatari troops. The military deals will allow Turkish military forces to be deployed in Qatari territory and allow Turkish gendarmerie forces to train Qatari gendarmerie forces in Qatar.

Lawmakers and the State Department were swift to verbally condemn Turkey, but the nation's embassy blamed the incident on the protesters, whom it claimed were "aggressively provoking" Turkish-American citizens who had gathered to greet Erdogan as he arrived.

Turkey has good relations with Qatar as well as several of its Gulf Arab neighbors.

Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan lined up behind Qatar in its feud with Saudi Arabia and regional allies, offering to mediate a resolution of a crisis that has thrown one of the world's most strategically important regions into turmoil.

Both draft bills, which were drawn up before the spat between Qatar and its Arab neighbours erupted, are expected to be approved by the Ankara parliament later on Wednesday.

"Efforts to isolate Qatar. will not solve any problem", said Erdogan, praising Doha's "cool-headedness" and "constructive approach". But Gulf Arab neighbors and Egypt have always been irked by its support for the Islamist Muslim Brotherhood, which they regard as a political enemy.

It urged dialogue between the Gulf States, adding that issues must be resolved "peacefully".

A former ambassador previously said that the base could hold up to 3,000 Turkish soldiers, stationed primarily to conduct joint training exercises.
