Van rams into worshippers at London mosque, 1killed”

Police say they are treating the incident as a terror attack, and add the suspect has been detained on suspicion of attempted murder.

A van ploughed into worshippers leaving a London mosque on Monday, killing at least one person and injuring several in what Britain's largest Muslim organisation said was a deliberate act of Islamophobia.

One elderly man, who had collapsed moments before the van appeared, was pronounced dead at the scene, although police have not yet confirmed whether he died as a result of the attack.

"There has been one person arrested", who authorities believe was the driver, police said.

Eight others are in hospital, with two in a very serious condition.

But the attack also laid bare the frustrations of a community who believe they've been unfairly equated with extremists who have carried out atrocities in the name of Islam.

A statement released by the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) condemned what it described as a "terror attack".

But she said more recently he'd become abusive, calling her 12-year-old son an "inbred" while playing on his bike.

- The Metropolitan police's Counter Terrorism Command forces are investigating the incident. There can never be any excuse for hate crime in any shape or form and more than ever in these uncertain times, we want those who are victims of hate crime to feel confident in the belief that we'll take your reports seriously.

London Underground staff left a defiant message for commuters following the Finsbury Park attack.

Mahmoud said he'd just finished leading prayers when he learned of the van attack.

A 47-year-old man was arrested at the scene and remains in police custody - with police describing the attack as a "terrorist incident".

According to witnesses, upon exiting the vehicle, Osborne allegedly was yelled "I'm going to kill all Muslims - I did my bit" and smiled, waved and blew kisses at the public.

As president, Trump has taken steps to protect Muslims from violence, including cruise missile strikes against Syria's military after blaming it for a chemical attack that killed dozens of civilians.

Communities Secretary Sajid Javid also visited the scene, and, outside the police cordon, comforted a woman who was visibly shaking. "I don't think we've seen the same sort of problems by any stretch of the imaginations", he said.

The MCB said on Twitter that the incident occurred near the Finsbury Park Mosque and that a van "intentionally" hit worshipers leaving the mosque.

It comes during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Despite the Mosque's controversial history, the residents of this diverse North London neighbourhood are renowned for "rubbing along together" as the British like to say. I will chair an emergency meeting later this morning.

Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May was heckled by protesters as she left a North London mosque on Monday. But imam Mohammed Mahmoud stepped up and told the angry crowd to stop and to restrain the suspect until police arrived instead.

An imam from the Muslim Welfare House then urged the crowd to remain calm. In January, a white nationalist opened fire on an Islamic cultural center in Quebec City, Canada, killing six people and wounding almost 20.

On March 22, a man drove a rented vehicle into pedestrians on Westminster Bridge in London and stabbed a police officer guarding the British parliament to death before being shot dead.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their families, and we've made it very clear to our British allies that we stand ready to provide any support or assistance", Spicer said.
