Brutal Slaying Near Mosque Was Road Rage

Brutal Slaying Near Mosque Was Road Rage”

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) filed a detainer against Torres on Monday, meaning he was living in the U.S. illegally.

Darwin Martinez Torres, 22, was in his auto when he got into a dispute with the 17-year-old girl and a group of her friends before dawn on Sunday in Sterling in Northern Virginia, about 30 miles (48 km) outside Washington, according to the Fairfax County Police Department. He has been charged in her murder.

What was supposed to be a morning of prayer and reflection in the Islamic holy month of Ramadan ended in tragedy when 17-year-old Nabra Hassanen was fatally attacked as she headed back to a Virginia mosque after enjoying a pre-dawn meal with friends.

WRC-TV in Washington reported that when the man got out of his auto, the girls ran away and didn't realize until later that the victim wasn't with them.

Nabra's father, Mohmoud Hassanen, directly disagreed with the FCPD's statement. Murdering a child & dumping her body in a pond is something else. It's a crime motivated by prejudice - whether it's based on race, religion, gender or sexual orientation. Authorities said they looked into whether the murder was a hate crime but said they found no evidence it was.

Nabra died from blunt-force trauma to the head and neck, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner of Northern Virginia said.

Police in Virginia say "road rage" prompted the killing 17-year-old Nabra Hassanen.

The online story was accompanied by a heartbreaking video of the mourning father, who can not understand why this man would kill his teenaged daughter. For what? She didn't do anything to anybody. "He went and drove his auto and came back, and picked her up and threw her in a lake a mile from the mosque", he said.

A steady stream of mourners visited the family's home on Monday.

The mosque and Hassanen's high school are offering grief counseling. Efforts to reach her relatives Monday were unsuccessful.

Fairfax County police charged Darwin Martinez Torres, 22, of Sterling, Virginia, with murder in connection with the case. US immigration officials requested that a "detainer" be placed on him at the county jail, meaning they are interested in possible future deportation proceedings. "Mr. Martinez Torres has no prior encounters with ICE".

Hussein's friends called police and a frantic search was mounted for the girl to no avail. Then, the driver jumped the sidewalk, forcing teens to run into the woods to hide. At one point, the motorist got out of his vehicle and assaulted the girl, said the police. "While searching, one officer saw a auto driving suspiciously in the area and stopped it", the statement added. Later, at about 15:00, police found the remains in a pond some three miles (five kilometres) from the scene of the incident, police said in a statement.

Martinez was arraigned Monday and was set to appear in court July 19. She was reportedly also sexually assaulted and police believe she was beaten with a bat.

"She's one of a kind".

Chaudry, who lives in the Washington suburbs, says the crime has prompted her to forbid her 20-year-old daughter from going out in the middle of the night without a parent.

The department tweeted earlier today that it will hold a press conference to further address Hassanen's killing at 6 p.m. EDT.
