Chinese President Calls for Solidarity, Cooperation with SCO Members

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who attended the summit, thanked SCO member countries for giving support to India's induction.

At the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, both the leaders addressed for the need of a coordinated efforts and approach to fight terrorism in the region by clamping down on terror funds.

Coordinated efforts are needed to fight the menace of terrorism, including radicalisation, recruitment, training and financing of terrorists, Modi said in a veiled message to Pakistan, whose Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was among the leaders present at the Summit. "I think there was also an understanding (between Modi and Xi) that where we have differences, it was important that those differences should not become disputes, and in fact they were handled well, could even be opportunities", he said.

Modi also raised the issue of terrorism. As SCO members, India and Pakistan troops may jointly take part in anti-terrorism exercises, which is an irony considering that their membership of Saarc has done little to rein in terrorism.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif exchanged pleasantries at the cultural gala here, amid frosty bilateral ties, deadlocked talks and escalation of hostilities along the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir. Other members are: Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyztan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. Xi's snub comes after deep disappointment and grief felt in China over the killings, after two Chinese teachers were kidnapped in Quetta last month and were reportedly murdered by Islamic State terrorists.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Modi also highlighted his concerns for Indo-China relationships and said that the two countries must boost their cooperation, strengthen communication and coordination in worldwide affairs. India and Pakistan were admitted to the SCO group as observers in 2005 and began the administrative process of joining the organisation in 2015.

He said the SCO membership achievement had come at a time when Pakistan was already working on various mega projects and joining the One Belt One Road initiative.
