Liverpool End Interest In Van Dijk And Apologise To Southampton In Statement”

The Anfield club say they regret the "misunderstanding" over their much-publicised pursuit of the Netherlands global.

Few days back, we covered a report (via BBC) claiming that the Dutch defender wants to sign for the Merseysiders but things completely changed after the news came out that Southampton will report Liverpool to the Premier League.

The Dutchman looks set to become the latest Saints' star to swap St Mary's for Anfield, but whilst previous dealings between the two clubs have been good natured, it seems the Van Dijk deal will be anything but.

Let this be a reminder to Chelsea to not do anything silly or Peter Kenyon-esque again.

And Hamann thinks the whole saga regarding Van Dijk has made Liverpool a "laughing stock".

Sky sources reported on Tuesday that the Saints had reported Liverpool to the Premier League and asked them to investigate an alleged illegal approach.

The 60-word statement included an apology to Southampton for a "misunderstanding" about Van Dijk and the incessant media speculation.

Jurgen Klopp had been willing to make Van Dijk the most expensive defender in world football by meeting the South Coast club's valuatation of £50 million.

Liverpool has a list of alternatives, but Klopp will be furious about what's happened and will be actively encouraging Moore to do all he can to get Southampton to play ball before the end of the summer.

Van Dijk is said to have preferred Liverpool ahead of interest from fellow interested parties Chelsea and Manchester City.

"We do not need to sell any player for the first time since I've been here", Krueger said.

Van Dijk ― who joined Southampton in 2015 after impressing at Scottish champions Celtic ― was apparently keen to move to Liverpool not only for Champions League football but because his good friend and compatriot Georginio Wijnaldum is there.

Liverpool have signed Sadio Mane, Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren and Nathaniel Clyne from Southampton in recent transfer windows.
