Trump seizes on Republican victory in Georgia to push agenda”

Former Georgia Secretary of State Karen Handel beat Democrat Jon Ossoff in the special election in suburban Atlanta on Tuesday by 52 percent to 48 percent in what is usually a much more solid GOP district. The race was called by the Associated Press roughly three hours after the polls closed at 7 p.m on June 20.

He came up short, as Handel won by about 5 percentage points, according to incomplete returns. Handel defeated Ossoff in Fulton and Cobb counties.

Tuesday's highly-anticipated runoff was the most expensive House campaign in history, with a price tag of more than $50 million. Handel's win shows that even Republican voters who may have been reluctant to embrace Trump will still come home to vote for more traditional GOP candidates.

While all of America had its eyes set on the special election in Georgia Tuesday, a race for a U.S. House seat in SC proved to be a surprisingly close result for the Democratic Party.

"Defeating Republicans in districts that they have traditionally held requires doing something drastically different than establishment Democrats have done before - specifically, running on a bold progressive vision and investing heavily in direct voter contact", said Jim Dean, chair of Democracy for America. Handel has lived in in the 6th district in Roswell, Georgia for roughly 25 years.

The election was the most expensive in congressional history, with at least $57 million spent by the campaigns and outside groups, almost twice the previous record set in Florida in 2012, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee took in $9.2 million in May compared to the National Republican Congressional Committee's $6.5 million, according to disclosures filed with the Federal Election Commission, as both sides contested special elections in Montana and Georgia.

Seen as an early proxy for whether Democrats can flip certain Republican-leaning districts in the President Donald Trump era, Tuesday's election drew national attention and record cash from around the country.

"This is the beginning of something much bigger than us", Ossoff said.

Ossoff told his supporters: 'The fight goes on'. Handel emphasized that pedigree often during her campaign and again during her victory speech. We also already knew it would only represent a very weird district that Trump won by just 1.5 points in the 2016 presidential election - but also reelected Republican Tom Price to Congress by 23 points. And I wish him and his fiancee Alisha Kramer all the best in the new life that they are going to be starting.?

With the Georgia victory, Republicans showed that they could still win in the kind of affluent, educated districts where Democrats have made gains and Trump's populist agenda was sometimes a tough sell.

The House bill would dismantle the main pillars of the current health care system, eliminating Obamacare taxes on the wealthy and insurers; getting rid of the individual mandate; significantly curtailing federal support for Medicaid; and allowing states to loosen key Obamacare protections for people with pre-existing conditions.
