Pelosi confident of her caucus' support

Pelosi confident of her caucus' support”

The response from some: It better be.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi is getting a great deal of blame from Democrats for this week's special election losses in Georgia and SC, but another former House Speaker, Newt Gingrich said Thursday he hopes she stays right where she is.

The apparent effectiveness of that messaging suggested to some that the 77-year-old Californian could be a liability for Democrats as they aim to regain their majority.

And after she predicted incorrectly that Democrats were poised to take back the House a year ago, some of Pelosi's colleagues feel that this time around, she needs to deliver. The current debate is concerned with whether Pelosi is being made into a scapegoat, or if she's the person most responsible for the Democrats' political setbacks. "The House remains in play now". Pelosi acknowledged the attacks but added, "I think I'm worth the trouble".

"She's a great fundraiser, but if the money we're raising through her leadership is not helping us win elections, we have to have this hard conversation now", Rice said.

And progressive activists' willingness to pour millions of dollars' worth of small-dollar online contributions into Ossoff's campaign - donations fueled nearly entirely by a desire to deal Trump a political setback - was what convinced Democrats to take the race seriously. 'And I hope that the Democrats keep her right where she is for a long, long time.

"It's not up to them", the California Democrat said of members calling for her to let someone else give it a try, before calling herself a "master legislator".

The National Republican Congressional Committee said that internal data shows linking Pelosi to the Democratic candidate in Georgia helped the GOP win, according to Business Insider.

And for some, they point to questions about how their leaders, and Pelosi in particular, have fallen short in crafting an economic message that can counter Trump and yield election victories.

"We as Democrats have to come to terms with the fact that we lost again", said Rep. Seth Moulton, D-Mass.

Rice said she has significant respect for the long-serving California lawmaker, but not as the ongoing leader of the Democratic Party. So it's time for change. "But this is something we certainly have to discuss, because it's clear that I think across the board in the Democratic Party, we need new leadership".

Pelosi, 77, has led the House Democratic caucus for almost 15 years, from the minority into the majority and back again. Democrats have to pick up 24 House seats to get back into power.

"The brand is just bad", Ryan said.

"If we take back the House in 2018 then I think she'd stay leader", said Rep. Ruben Gallego, D-Ariz.

Even Cher chimed in, tweeting that the GOP runs against her in every race.

But Pelosi continues to command great loyalty from many in the House, and she insisted her position was not in jeopardy.

'Do I think it's fair that the Republican playbook over the last four election cycles has been attacking Nancy Pelosi and demonizing her?' Rice began. "We've seen her run circles around (former House Speaker) John Boehner and get things done that nobody thought Democrats could do in the minority".

Democrat Jon Ossoff lost a highly contested special election in Georgia's 6th District Tuesday night, dashing the party's hopes of notching their first electoral win since President Donald Trump's election.

Ossoff's race against Republican Karen Handel was the most expensive House race in history.

"She's easy to demonize".

Pelosi said she believes the reason why the GOP has spent millions targeting her during elections is because she's "an effective leader".

Instead, he said Democrats need to focus on developing a message that wins over voters in Republican-leaning districts.
