Sergio Garcia makes positive start to BMW International”

Wade Ormsby has a one shot lead after the opening round of the European Tour's BMW International Open on Thursday.

Garcia opened with four solid pars and then birdied three of the next four holes to turn in 33, and the Spaniard followed another gain at 11 with further birdies at 16 and 18 to cap a positive performance, although he then revealed he had suffered a minor back problem during the US Open.

Ormsby, whose round included eight birdies, sits just one shot clear of Belgian Thomas Detry, who looked like he would be ahead after the first round having set the pace in the morning.

Sergio Garcia marked his first appearance on European soil since winning the Masters by heading into the second day of the BMW International in third place.

Detry recovered superbly from an opening bogey at the first, making back-to-back birdies immediately after.

"It's huge for me, this time of year, I've worked pretty hard the last six weeks and three missed cuts, I haven't got what I wanted out of it", the 27-year-old told

That was enough for a one-shot lead ahead of Thomas Detry, who nearly impressed with an opening 65, while Garcia was in a share of third with Joost Luiten and Thorbjorn Olesen.

"I felt like I played quite well, not spectacular, but very consistent", Garcia said.

He returned to level par with a six at the long ninth before dropping further shots on 12 and 14 and concluding an unhappy inward nine with a bogey at the short 17th.

Defending champion Henrik Stenson is a shot behind on five under, where he is joined by England's Richard Bland, James Morrison, Tommy Fleetwood and Matthew Southgate.
