U.S. fails to intercept missile in overnight test”

Late last month, in a successful test, a USA long-range interceptor missile destroyed an intercontinental-range missile fired from a test site on Kwajalein Atoll in the Pacific.

The US Missile Defense Agency intends to conduct extensive analysis of the test data and complete a review.

The destroyer detected and tracked the target on the AN/SPY-1 phased array radar but was unable to intercept it. In February 2017, a similar intercept test was successful, according to the release.

The test also marked the fourth flight test of the SM-3 Block IIA and the second time it was launched from a ship.

The statement described the SM-3 Block IIA as "a new, developmental interceptor that is not yet fielded by either country", but being developed cooperatively to defeat medium- and intermediate-range ballistic missiles. John Paul Jones is the Navy's missile defense ship; it replaced the cruiser Lake Erie in 2014. The first test was successful, but this latest attempt failed after missing the target for reasons not explained in the statement.

Wednesday night's failure is in contrast with the first-ever intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) interception on May 30, when a Ground-Based Midcourse Defense (GMD) missile fired from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California successfully hit a target fired from the Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands.

This was the second intercept test.
