Camila Giorgi upsets Elina Svitolina at Aegon Classic

Camila Giorgi upsets Elina Svitolina at Aegon Classic”

"It's awesome because I have been struggling a little bit on grass in the last few years", Svitolina smiled.

Elina Svitolina's relationship with the grass suffered another downturn after she lost the second round match to Camila Giorgi, before admitting that a foot injury might also scupper her Wimbledon chances.

Garbine Muguruza, the former Wimbledon finalist, played an impressively forceful baseline game while beating Alison Riske, the American who has twice been a semifinalist, by 6-1, 6-4.

"It's very tough to say, because I just lost the match and my head is not even sad about losing that match".

"I will do my best".

"For me, I didn't find my footing and once you go down as I did in the first set it's very hard to get back in the match".

"At the moment I will use the time to think things over, to see my physiotherapist and think with your team, what's best for me, if you look at the big picture" - quoted Svitolina portal "tennis of Ukraine". "I think I did a reasonable job of playing as well as I could after that but it was nowhere near enough". "It's really important to play as many matches as possible, so [playing qualifying] helped me".

Muguruza racked up six successive games on her way to victory and will now face Coco Vandeweghe in the last eight.

Wimbledon commences on July 3rd but the 22-year-old feels the conditions on grass could aggravate her injury worry.

Svitolina started the Aegon Classic as the highest-ranked player following the withdrawal of world No. 1 Angelique Kerber, but the second seed was out-hit by Italian qualifier Giorgi, who triumphed 6-4 4-6 6-2.

Fifth seed Kristina Mladenovic completes the quarter-final line up after a 6-4 7-6 (7-3) win over Shuai Zhang, the Frenchwoman setting up a meeting with two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova. "And as I said, I was surprised that I managed to come back into the game and win second set and actually played some good points, even though I was not there 100 percent".

The Italian now has an enticing opportunity to enhance that reputation, as she will have a quarter-final against another surprise survivor, Ashleigh Barty, a 21-year-old Australian making her first appearance in the main draw.
