The father of two is believed to have suffered a heart attack on Thursday night after a recent attempt at rehabilitation in a clinic, then hospital near his Byron Bay home.

He went on to train with some of the best chefs in the world before moving to Sydney to become Head Chef of Aqua Luna Bar and Restaurant at Sydney's East Circular Quay.

Darren became well known in the foodie scene by having regular appearances on Seven's Sunrise, Ten's Ready, Steady, Cook and Lifestyle FOOD channel's The Best and writing columns doe various national and overseas publications.

After being named Young Chef of the Year at just 21, Irish-born Simpson worked at a number of high-profile restaurants, including Paul Rankin's Roscoff in Ireland and Albert Roux's Le Gavroche in London, both Michelin-starred.

News of Simpson's death has sent shock waves across the Australian restaurant community and beyond. "Thinking of his family", Moran said, to which chefs including former MasterChef contestant Dan Churchill replied "What?!".

In this undated photo released by Foxtel, Darren Simpson, left, poses with his co-hosts and fellow chefs Anna Gare and Ben O'Donoghue during a promotion for their cooking show "The Best in Australia".

His peer and friend Jason Roberts wrote: 'Devastated.

"RIP Darren Simpson. The world has lost another brilliant mind!"

Simpson's family back in the United Kingdom have also been stunned by the loss. He was a amusing immature, caring guy, gonna miss you and your sick jokes! "Love you Uncle Darren", his nephew Matt posted to Facebook.

In a past interview with News Limited, Simpson said he hoped his two boys "do whatever they want to do in life and find contentment and happiness".
