Church of England admits to hiding sex abuse of boys

Church of England admits to hiding sex abuse of boys”

Honorary assistant bishop George Carey has been asked to resign by the Archbishop of Canterbury over his role in a 20-year cover up of sexual abuse perpetrated by former bishop Peter Ball.

The present Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Rev Justin Welby, said a review by Dame Moira Gibb showed that under Lord Carey's leadership, the church "colluded and concealed" to protect Ball "rather than seeking to help those [victims] who were fearless enough to come forward".

Welby ordered the independent review of the church's handling of the case in 2015.

"The church appears to have been most interested in protecting itself", the report concluded.

"Ball's priority was to protect and promote himself and he maligned the abused", she wrote.

"The church colluded and concealed rather than seeking to help those who were fearless enough to come forward".

It stated: "Peter Ball betrayed his Church and abused individual followers of that Church".

"The church colluded with that rather than seeking to help those he had harmed, or assuring itself of the safety of others".

The report said Ball's conduct "caused serious and enduring damage to the lives of many men", but at the time the church trivialized it, partly because of a lack of understanding about safeguarding vulnerable adult men.

The report points out that Carey's successor as Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, presided over the Church when it began a review of abuse which led to Ball's case being reopened.

'We must now act on the recommendations put forward by Dame Moira Gibb, and all bishops must demonstrate our accountability for making sure everyone in our church is kept safe.

"This is inexcusable and shocking behavior", Welby said.

Welby described the report as a "harrowing read".

Bishop Hancock added that for the survivors, "it may feel like this is all too late".

The review states that Lambeth Palace's actions, especially in failing to pass on six letters of allegations to the police, while giving them one which was of "least concern" - "must give rise to a perception of deliberate concealment". I once again offer them my wholehearted apology.

Lord Carey said Thursday that the report made for "uncomfortable reading" and he apologized to Mr. Ball's victims.

"For the survivors who were fearless enough to share their story and bring Peter Ball to justice, I once again offer an unreserved apology".

"If you want to talk to someone outside of the Church of England you can call the CCPAS helpline on 03030 031111".
