Expect a rainy New Orleans weekend after Tropical Storm Cindy

Some coastal areas in Texas and Louisiana are under a tropical storm warning and forecasters are warning of potential heavy flooding as Tropical Storm Cindy moved inland from the Gulf of Mexico Thursday morning. It is the first tropical system to make landfall in Louisiana since Hurricane Isaac in 2012.

Urban, densely populated areas near Birmingham, Alabama's largest city, have taken significant damage.

In addition to the floods, Buckles said the area will be under a slight threat for severe thunderstorms on Friday including gusty winds from 50 to 60 miles per hour, the chance of small hail showers and "spin up" tornados - these are short lived and weak.

The remnants of Tropical Storm Cindy provided a good, soaking rain across much of Webster Parish Thursday.

Alabama was also the scene of the storm's only reported casualty, which happened when a log washed ashore killing a 10-year-old boy. Water levels rise after a combination of high tide and the rain from Tropical Storm Cindy in Lake Charles, La., Thursday, June 22, 2017. At 4 p.m. CDT Thursday, Cindy was about 45 miles (75 kilometers) south of Shreveport.

"Most of us will receive 2-3" of rain Friday night, but some locations may see as little as an inch while others may see as much as 4" of rain.

The National Hurricane Center also warned of the possibility of a few tornadoes Thursday "from the lower MS and Tennessee Valley regions to the central Gulf Coast".

"Right now, we're not anticipating any severe weather with these storms", Villanueva said.

In southwest Louisiana, not far from where Cindy came ashore before dawn Thursday, motorists in trucks were driving through knee-high water in the streets.

Crews in Memphis, Tenn., worked Thursday to clear storm drains to help prevent street flooding.

The Alabama Cooperative Extension System said in a warning Wednesday that the floodwaters will not kill the state's invasive fire ant population. Life-threatening flash flooding may occur.

Rainfall amounts of 1 to 4 inches are expected to begin and expand across parts of the Tennessee and OH valleys.

The storm brings strong winds over the eastern part of the warning area, with storm surges of 1 to 3 feet and some tornadoes.

Numerous coastal roads and highways flooded and there were scattered reports of power outages and building damage from wind or water.
