Iran tells Riyadh to free Iranian fishermen, pay compensation for killing one

Iran tells Riyadh to free Iranian fishermen, pay compensation for killing one”

"Saudi guards killed one of the sailors by opening fire on the boats", Fars quoted a statement published by Iran's Interior Ministry.

"One group of the fishermen could steer their boat back onto the main course, but the two other boats were driven towards the shared sea borders with Saudi Arabia, unaware of their situation or unable to control the vessels", it said.

"Carrying fishing and legal permits, three fishing boats departed from (Iranian) Bushehr Port on Thursday toward deep Persian Gulf waters. The other sailor, Farhad Siamir (son of the victim) managed to move the boat away from the place and then to the beach".

The head of Iran's atomic energy organisation, one of the architects of the 2015 landmark nuclear deal, has warned the United States to stop upsetting the regional balance of power by siding with Saudi Arabia.

"Every year, dozens of fishing vessels belonging to neighboring countries may unpredictably enter the territorial waters due to a lack of signs on the borderline".

On Monday, Saudi Arabia's information ministry offered a different narrative, claiming that the arrestees were members of Iran's Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) who were trying to approach the kingdom's offshore Marjan oilfield for sabotage purposes.

One of the fishermen of the boat returning into Iranian waters got killed in the shooting.

Elsewhere in the statement, Iran's Interior Ministry also reminded the Saudi government of its legal responsibilities, urging them to compensate for the damage, punish the perpetrators of this irresponsible act, and immediately release the arrested ones whose families are extremely anxious about their health.

Tehran urges Saudi Arabia to release the three Iranians and pay compensation for shooting dead another.

Iran denied the Saudi claim saying the three were fishermen and were not arrested aboard an explosive-laden boat as claimed by Riyadh.
