Ivanka Trump returns to Hill to talk workforce issues

Ivanka Trump visited Capitol Hill Wednesday to meet with Republican lawmakers on a proposal to expand a tax credit for families.

Trump, who took an official role at the White House at the end of March, has made paid family leave a focus of her new position, and appeared pleased with how the meeting went.

Marco Rubio, who touted paid family leave during his 2016 presidential run, said lawmakers and President Donald Trump's eldest daughter discussed a variety of tax proposals meant to benefit families, particularly those who are low-income.

In February, Ivanka Trump met with lawmakers writing the tax plan to include tax cuts for child care expenses.

In the snapshot, the Florida Republican is seen leaning in to give Trump a hug as she stands with her arms at her side. The meeting was described as "pro-family," and The Hill reported that the conversation included the topic of paid family leave.

This is published unedited from the PTI feed. Kevin Brady, its chairman, said at the time that the committee had "some preliminary and very productive discussions [about] their desire to make child care more affordable for families". Marco Rubio playfully put a conspiracy to rest Tuesday evening after the Twitterverse had a field day with a photo of the two in an awkward embrace.

Rubio said he also has a proposal to combine different child-related tax credits into a single credit. Tim Scott and Utah Sen. Each has their own plan involving giving tax credits to businesses voluntarily offering one to three months of paid leave.

The first daughter also faced mixed reactions to her part of Tuesday's Twitter exchange with Rubio.

Rubio is no stranger to calling for a paid family leave - he campaigned on it during his bid for president a year ago. "Ivanka was working with Miller in his office in the afternoon on the speech, including the paragraph on paid family leave". The leave would be for both men and women and would be separate from vacation or sick leave.
