Mourners Remember Otto Warmbier At Hometown Funeral”

A crowd of some 2,000 people filled a high school auditorium in Otto Warmbier's hometown of OH to celebrate his life.

A long line of mourners formed in the early hours of the morning for Warmbier's funeral, held at the high school from which he graduated in 2013.

North Korea on Friday called itself the "biggest victim" in the death of an American student who was detained for more than a year and died days after being released in a coma.

"To see a young man go over there healthy and, (after) a minor act of mischief, come home dead basically. this goes beyond any kind of understanding of law and order, of humanity, of responsibility toward any human being", Mattis said.

It was his life that held mourners' attention Thursday as they fondly remembered a spirited student-athlete who was socially magnetic and had a positive impact on the people around him, whether it was in class, at a swim club or in his travels.

Beerck described Warmbier as a "goofy kid" who would "drop anything to help his friends".

Some 2,500 mourners attended a Thursday morning memorial at Wyoming High School. The auditorium has an overflow capacity of 800 people, and there is room for several hundred more in other areas of the school.

Warmbier's brother, sister and friends spoke at the service, NPR member station WVXU in Cincinnati reports.

Trump told Yang he looked forward to "enhancing cooperation" with China on the denuclearization of the North, the ministry said in a statement. On Wednesday Yang and top General Fang Fenghui met with Tillerson and Defense Secretary Jim Mattis at the State Department to discuss North Korea and other regional issues.

Warmbier's death, paired with continued North Korean missile tests in recent months, has significantly increased tensions yet again between Washington and Pyongyang.

Warmbier was jailed in North Korea for allegedly attempting to steal a political banner from Yanggakdo International Hotel in Pyongyang. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison and hard labor. Last week, North Korean officials allowed Warmbier, who was in a coma, to be taken back to the US. North Korea said he had contracted botulism and that it was releasing him on "humanitarian grounds".

Warmbier died Monday of severe brain damage, which doctors said was likely due to cardiopulmonary arrest.

"This college kid never should have been detained in the first place", said Mr Portman, who previously revealed he met secretly with North Korean officials in NY last December to press for Mr Warmbier's release.

The US side is expected to press China to cooperate on a further toughening of worldwide sanctions on North Korea.

As a hearse carried Warmbier's coffin away, some mourners held up their fingers in the shape of a "W", for his name, according to AP.

President Donald Trump slammed Warmbier's detention and eventual death as "a total disgrace".

The Hamilton County Coroner's office did not perform an autopsy at the request of the Warmbier family.
