Nishikori retires injured, Khachanov to play Rublev in Halle”

Zverev next plays seventh-seeded Roberto Bautista Agut, who defeated German wild card Dustin Brown 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (6).

Top-seeded Roger Federer overcame a stern challenge from Mischa Zverev on Thursday before recording a 7-6 (4), 6-4 victory in a second-round match at the ATP Gerry Weber Open in Halle, Germany. He did not face a break point.

The Halle tournament is played on grass and has as first player Roger Federer who has won most of the titles.

Zverev made the last four at the Ricoh Open last week before succumbing to the big-serving Gilles Muller and the 20-year-old impressed again in Halle to overcome Kohlschreiber.

The Spaniard twice served to stay in the match at 4-5 and 5-6 in the deciding set.

Nishikori's progress has been hampered by injuries and the third seed was 3-2 down in his first grass-court tournament of the year when he retired from his encounter with Karen Khachanov due to a back problem.

The American No 30 took just 24 minutes to bully a player 23 places above her in the rankings out of the first set and though Konta pulled herself together for the second, it was not enough to prevent a 6-1, 6-3 defeat.

Zverev managed to stick by Federer early on - having lost their last grass-court meeting 6-0 6-0 - but the Swiss turned the screw on the German's serve in a marathon tenth game. That's the first time I've felt like that since Miami, so that's a good sign looking ahead.' In the quarters he will face Florian Mayer, beaten seven times on seven matches played. He withdrew past year before his second-round match versus Mayer and retired in his 2015 semifinal against Andreas Seppi.
