President Trump says he didn't tape his conversations with Comey

President Trump says he didn't tape his conversations with Comey”

On May 12, a day after details of a one-on-one dinner he had with Comey were reported by the New York Times, Trump issued an apparent threat to the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director, whom he had recently fired. Trump tweeted on May 17.

The existence of a recording would certainly help clarify whether Mr Trump attempted to obstruct justice during a series of one-on-one meetings between the two men.

If it was an attempt to intimidate Comey, as many have speculated, it backfired spectacularly.

Trump's comments about the "tapes" on Thursday come one day before the deadline by which the White House was to turn over information to the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence about "whether any White House recordings or memoranda of Comey's conversations with President Trump now exist or have in the past". Secret Service, in response to a request under the Freedom of Information Act, said it had no tapes of Mr. Trump's conversations with his former Federal Bureau of Investigation director.

Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats and National Security Agency Director Admiral Mike Rogers met separately last week with investigators for Special Counsel Robert Mueller and the Senate Intelligence Committee, according to CNN.

The saga began in May, just days after Trump fired Comey, who was then leading an investigation into contact before and after the election between the president's campaign and Russian officials.

In a June 8 hearing in Congress, Comey described several meetings with Trump and said he, in fact, hoped the tapes do exist, as they would support his account of their discussions. There apparently are no tapes that could confirm what exactly happened in those chats. Trump refuted his own team's claims in an NBC News interview later in the week, saying he was going to fire Comey no matter what recommendation DOJ officials made. Trump, do you have a taping system?' And he said no.

Mystery solved: No, President Trump doesn't have recordings of former Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey. I'll tell you about it over a very short period of time.

It's unclear why it took the president more than a month to confirm that he didn't secretly record the conversations.

If you're a Trump critic, meanwhile, it's entirely possible he's lying here about there being no tapes because he knows they'll back up Comey's account of what was said about Mike Flynn and Russian Federation.

The President is known to be loath to publicly admit that he made a mistake. Nominated by President Barack Obama, Comey was confirmed in 2013 by a 93-1 vote in the Senate.

That admission came with a new conspiracy theory. "He knows how to play to America's insatiable appetite not just for news but for drama and interest".

Trump raised the possibility of tapes in a strategic fashion to deter Comey from talking to reporters.

"There have been a lot of surreal and unusual statements by Donald Trump, since he became President. But he seems to have a capacity to outdo himself", Connecticut Democratic Sen. Richard Blumenthal said on CNN.

The action was a "violation of the law, clearly", said Sekulow.
