Qatar's neighbors issue steep list of demands to end crisis

Earlier in the day, media reported that four Gulf Arab states demanded that Qatar reduce ties with Iran, halt military cooperation with Turkey and shut the Al Jazeera state broadcaster in order to mend ties with regional powers. Reuters was citing an official from one of the four countries.

- Shut down Al-Jazeera and its affiliate stations.

Cutting ties to Iran would prove incredibly hard.

Turkey says it has no plans to shut down its military base in Qatar as demanded by Saudi Arabia and other Arab nations that have cut ties with Doha.

- Stop interfering in the four countries' affairs. "But the demand to close [Al Jazeera] is a crime", Abuhilala said.

Supported by Qatar's government, Al-Jazeera is one of the most widely watched Arabic channels, but it has long drawn the ire of Mideast governments for airing alternative viewpoints.

According to the document posted on social media, the Saudi-led coalition demands that Qatar closes down Al-Jazeera, downgrades diplomatic ties with Iran and closes down a Turkish military base in the emirate.

Qatari officials in Doha did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the AP.

Though Qatar's neighbours have focused their grievances on alleged Qatari support for extremism, they have also voiced loud concerns about Qatar's relationship with Iran, the Shiite-led country that is a regional foe for Saudi Arabia and other Sunni-led nations.

The four Arab nations called on Qatar to sever ties with the Muslim Brotherhood, ISIS, al Qaeda, Hezbollah and Jabhat Fateh al Sham. The move has left Qatar, whose only land border is shared with Saudi Arabia, under a de facto blockade by its neighbors.

Qatar's government did not have any immediate reaction to the list.

"The leakage will further exasperate & prolong the Qatar crisis".

Anwar Gargash, the United Arab Emirates state minister for foreign affairs, issued the warning more than two weeks into the oil-rich region's worst diplomatic crisis in years. The U.S. has been urging them to produce a list of demands.

If Qatar agrees to comply, the list asserts that it will be audited once a month for the first year, and then once per quarter in the second year after it takes effect.

- Hand over "terrorist figures" and wanted individuals from Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt and Bahrain to their countries of origin.

"I can say that the Turkish base in Qatar is for the training of Qatari soldiers and for the security of Qatar and the region". He told The Associated Press on Friday that the network stands firm in providing "our usual comprehensive and impartial coverage of events around the world".

The current crisis followed a visit to Saudi Arabia by Donald Trump.

Qatari citizens were expelled from Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and the UAE, and those countries also banned their own citizens from entering Qatar.

Qatar said the website was hacked and United States officials later told CNN that USA investigators believe Russian hackers were behind it.
