Tropical Storm Cindy makes landfall in Cameron Parish

Tropical Storm Cindy makes landfall in Cameron Parish”

At least one death is already being blamed on the storm, a 10-year-old boy on an Alabama beach was struck and killed yesterday by a log thrown ashore by the storm surge.

As Tropical Storm Cindy is heading toward the Gulf Coast states, millions of people are bracing for heavy rain and potential flash flooding.

The system is moving north at 12 miles per hour, with winds at 40 miles per hour, according to a National Hurricane Center advisory.

The center predicts the storm will diminish to a tropical depression later Thursday as it heads north through Louisiana and then moves northeast through parts of several states including Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee and Kentucky.

A flash flood watch is in effect until 7 p.m. Thursday for most of south Louisiana and further inland, according to the National Weather Service forecast.

Forecasters warn the possibility of tornadoes and flooding rains will continue as the storm moves through the Southeast.

Cindy is the second tropical storm to form during the Atlantic hurricane season, which began June 1.

Cindy has also dumped 12-inches or more of rain in some of the hardest hit areas. County and local officials can send the division situation reports or requests for help as needed, he said.

As the remnant circulation of Cindy approaches the region late Friday or early Saturday, an uptick in showers and storms is expected.

Kerner said he's concerned that fast-rising water might affect homes and automobiles throughout the town and surrounding areas - even those protected by levees.

Cindy has now been downgraded to a tropical depression.

Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards declared a state of emergency, like his Alabama counterpart a day earlier. Meanwhile, southern MS, southern and central Alabama and far-western portions of the Florida Panhandle could see 2 to 4 inches of rain with as much as 8 inches in isolated spots.

According to the weather service, the Lehigh Valley is likely to see the bulk of any precipitation from Cindy hold off until after midnight Friday into Saturday.

The threat of an isolated tornado can not be ruled out.

Energy companies with operations in the Gulf of Mexico (GoM) reported little impact on production as a result of Tropical Storm Cindy.
