United States fighter jet shoots down 2nd Iranian-made drone over Syria”

The U.S. military says it shot down what it called an Iranian-made, armed drone in southern Syria. "All flying objects, including planes and drones of the global coalition, detected west of the Euphrates, will be followed by Russian air defence systems as targets", the Russian Defence Ministry said.

The incidents mark an escalation in the area around At Tanf - a base near the Syrian-Jordanian border manned by coalition forces that are advising an anti-ISIS Syrian rebel group.

The attack took place at about 12:30 a.m. local time Tuesday after an Iranian-made Shahed 129 drone, which is similar in size to a U.S. Predator drone, exhibited "the actions and intent similar to what happened in the first" shoot down, said a U.S. defense official who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

The most expensive House race in US history heads to voters Tuesday in the northern suburbs of Atlanta.

Australia's military yesterday said it was temporarily halting air missions over Syria, following the shooting down of a Syrian jet by United States forces. The airfield may be the source of drones that have recently threatened US troops.

The incident occurred in the same vicinity as previous conflicts with pro-regime forces, near the combat outpost in At-Tanf, where a contingent of USA and coalition advisers are supporting a force to fight the Islamic State, also known as ISIS.

A United States military official told AFP the drone was "on a run toward our folks to drop a munition on them", so the coalition shot the unmanned aircraft down in self defense.

Daraa is where Syria's crisis first broke out in March 2011 as an uprising against Assad's government.

The U.S. has also fired on Syrian government ground forces in the east on two occasions in just the last month.

Unlike in Iraq, where the a partner with Iraqi troops to liberate Mosul and other IS bastions, Washington has refused to work with Assad, who is mired in Syria's civil war that is in its seventh year and has killed more than 400,000 people.

"They are testing the limits", the source told Reuters without elaborating.

But his remarks came amid questions whether the strike had been effective.

Israeli security officials said Monday they were studying the missile strike to see what they could learn about its accuracy and capabilities.

Sharif says the missile launch reflects Iran's "military power" though Iran has no intention of starting another war.

Australian Defense Force Chief Mark Binskin said on Wednesday the operations were halted while the Australians examined what was happening in what he had described as a "complex piece of airspace" over Syria.

The aim is "to ensure that they can't easily be excluded, and that they remain on track to ultimately retake the entirety of the country", Heller said.

Similar to the US, Israel also has an agreement with Russian Federation to avoid conflicts over the skies of Syria.

Advances by the Syria-Russia-Iran axis offer the US a way out of a bind over how to handle what follows the retaking of Raqqa.
