With Derek Carr signed, Reggie McKenzie moving on to other extensions

With Derek Carr signed, Reggie McKenzie moving on to other extensions”

The contract comes less than two years after Wilson signed his deal with Seattle in July 2015, a four-year extension worth $87.6 million overall with $31.7 million guaranteed at signing and $61.5 million in total guarantees.

The Oakland Raiders signing Derek Carr to a five-year, $125 million contract extension was another reminder to the Jaguars about an inability to fix their quarterback situation, the biggest impediment in becoming relevant.

Oakland has an incredibly talented young core that includes Raiders wide receiver Amari Cooper, guard Gabe Jackson and defensive end Khalil Mack. Mack is entering the final year of his rookie deal with a fifth-year option season coming in 2018. It could take as much as $70 million guaranteed - the same promise Denver made Von Miller - to lock up Mack, so add cap creativity to McKenzie's list of priorities next to continued draft success. Jackson, a former third-round pick, is entering the final year of his deal.

Thanks to Carr, they "figured out a way to do it so [the organization has] the opportunity to sign the other guys" that help the team win, like the aforementioned players. Not really. The most important thing was that it got done. I hope that that's known. It just is what it is.

Carr was joined by Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie in a news conference that was televised live on both ESPN and the NFL Network.

McKenzie said working on deals for other players would now take priority with Carr in the fold and that the process of putting together the largest deal in franchise history wasn't all that hard.

"The bottom line is we're able to continue to move forward to be to keep all the players that we need to keep in the correct timing", McKenzie said. "We'll start on that ASAP".

Carr can now go back to work knowing that there are no lingering issues heading into training camp.

Wilson is likely to fall to eighth, as Detroit's Matthew Stafford is working on a contract that likely would top Carr's deal. Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins could also begin navigating those waters.

"I don't care if they all do, we got our contract done, that's all that matters to me", Carr said. "We both wanted the same thing".

"I'm honored to be the quarterback of the team that I love, the only team that was on my mind, right from the draft process", Carr said.
