Alex Salmond out in bad night for the SNP”

Sturgeon's original intention, endorsed by the Scottish Parliament, was to hold the vote after the Brexit negotiations ended but before the United Kingdom left the European Union, if the deal did not allow Scotland to remain within the single market.

The Conservatives ended up with 13 MPs from north of the border, giving the party its best result in Scotland since 1983.

Then Mr Salmond was dethroned by the Tories in his seat of Gordon, with the Scottish Conservatives grabbing a majority of 3,693 on an astonishing swing of 20 per cent.

With all of Scotland's seats now declared, the SNP managed to win only 35, in what will be viewed as a major blow for Nicola Sturgeon's plans for a second independence referendum.

Tory leader Ruth Davidson, who campaigned heavily on opposition to another referendum, called for a second ballot to be "off the table", branding the demand "a massive political miscalculation".

The SNP leader said: "This has been a disaster for Theresa May".

Black added that she "would love it" if Jeremy Corbyn was in a position to form some form of government and that the SNP would be prepared to work with a Corbyn administration on an issue by issue basis.

"I don't recall us ever voting for significant Tory policy in the past and it would be hard to see in the current climate with the austerity cuts, hard Brexit party, that we would want to support them in any way in this future parliament".

Ms Sturgeon admitted she was "disappointed" by the election results and said she would "reflect" on her plans for independence, but insisted she would not make any "rash decisions".

The former SNP leader predicted that the Nationalists would now try to form a "progressive alliance" with Mr Corbyn to keep the Tories out of power.

She paid tribute to Mr Robertson, who had been MP for Moray since 2001, describing him as a "politician and parliamentarian of huge stature, who week after week held the Prime Minister to account, providing the scrutiny that the official opposition in the House of Commons failed to do". "We're proud to be part of the United Kingdom".

The SNP has also lost the Ochil and South Perthshire constituency, Angus, and Banff and Buchan to the Conservatives - all constituencies where they were defending majorities of several thousand.

Those suggested the SNP would lose about 12 constituencies, although senior figures were braced for the loss of 15 seats.

According to Ross, Labour could end up with seven seats in Scotland.

The Liberal Democrats won four seats and enjoyed a notable success in East Dunbartonshire, where former United Kingdom government minister Jo Swinson won back the seat she had lost in 2015. I've got a few fantastic new generation of Labour MPs going down to the House of Commons next week.

The Prime Minister had now "lost all authority and credibility", Ms Sturgeon said.

Labour also defeated the SNP to win the Midlothian constituency.
