Almost 1300 children killed by guns in U.S. every year

Almost 1300 children killed by guns in U.S. every year”

The study comes as a four-year-old Pennsylvania boy shot himself in the face and died on Sunday. An 8-year-old boy in MS was caught in gunfire and shot in the head Saturday while he slept in the back seat of his mother's auto.

Suicide was calculated only for children 10 or older in the study.

A new study found that almost 1,300 children are killed by guns each year in the United States.

Researchers found, for example, that each year between 2012 and 2014, the majority of gun related deaths were homicides (53 percent). What's more is that roughly 19 children are either wounded or killed every day from a gun.

While these numbers are alarming on their own, new analysis also noted a disturbing rise in gun-related child suicides.

According to a CBS News report, gunshot wounds are now the third leading cause of death among children ages 1 to 17, shedding new light on an issue that has come to dominate newsfeeds.

Lead author Katherine Fowler of the CDC says that such research "is fundamental for understanding the problem and developing scientifically sound solutions".

The report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention involves children and teens through age 17.

Firearms kill nearly 1,300 American youngsters each year, and boys and black children are most often the victims, a USA study finds.

Three groups were the most likely to die in shootings, black children, older kids, and boys, according to the study. While African-American children had the highest rate of homicide, white and Native American children had the highest rate of suicide.

African American children had the highest rate of all firearm deaths at 4.1 out of every 100,000 children.

Washington D.C., Louisiana, Wyoming, and Alaska were the places with the most gun-related deaths.

Many gun control advocates in the U.S. have called for similar restrictions to those Australia imposed in 1996 following the Port Arthur Massacre, banning military style automatic and semi-automatic firearms while strongly limiting the availability of other types of rifles. Doctors said that there are methods available to safely secure and store firearms in homes, and they recommend that if parents are keeping guns in their houses, they should follow such practices.

Malvezzi said that making guns safer is essential.

There is some hopeful news in the study.

The number of child firearm homicides was up significantly from 2002 to 2007 (+17%, annual percent change=4.6, P 0.05), but then posted a significant decline from 2007 to 2014 (-36%, annual percent change= -6.7, P 0.05). Stats include accidental and intentional shootings. Childhood suicides, on the other hand, "were most often precipitated by acute crises and life stressors such as relationship, school, and crime problems". The results seen below tell the story of why the CDC views gun violence as a public health crisis.

Yet we continue to ignore it. Boys accounted for 82 per cent of all child firearm deaths.

In September 2016, Pediatrics published a study by researchers from the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis in which parents were surveyed in pediatrician office waiting rooms in Missouri and IL.
