Amazon wants to build multi-story delivery drone hives

Amazon wants to build multi-story delivery drone hives”

In its filing, Amazon notes that traditional fulfillment centers are often located outside of cities due to their large size, such facilities are not feasible in urban environments due to the cost of land and limited square footage.

As part of its ongoing mission to take over the world and automate everything, Amazon has just filed a new patent for huge beehive-style buildings where their little delivery drones can pick up packages and go to sleep at night.

"By locating the fulfillment centers within the cities, items may be more quickly delivered to the growing population of people that live in the cities, as well as the large population of people who work in the cities". Amazon's patent application with the United States Patent and Trademark Office says that the multi-level drone barn could be situated "possibly in an urban setting, such as in a densely populated area".

Three designs show different potential configurations for a multi-level fulfillment center.

CBS Insights added: "Amazon has been ramping up its patent applications in supply chain and logistics". Order placed by local customers will then be packaged up, fitted to a drone and sent to their garden.

Amazon also filed for a patent in April 2016 for blimps stocked with drones to make extra speedy deliveries. Amazon has also said on previous occasions that its drones will be able to fly at speeds of up to 50mph.

Amazon is among the several companies working to make drone deliveries a reality. It adds: "The look and characteristics of the vehicles will continue to evolve over time".
