Boston renames street after retired slugger David Ortiz

The street formerly known as Yawkee Way Extension now goes by the name David Ortiz Drive.

Normally, the struggling Porcello's start would draw extra scrutiny but it will be overshadowed by Friday's pregame ceremony to retire the number of slugger David Ortiz, who called it quits after the 2016 season.

"This city means a lot to me".

Rick Porcello avoided becoming the major league's first 10-game loser as the Red Sox opened a seven-game homestand with the win.

Ortiz said he never thought about having his number retired by the Red Sox when his career was over, but he always did try to hit them during batting practice.

"I don't have enough words", he said, via MacPherson. With three World Series titles - including the 2004 championship that ended an 86-year drought - Ortiz dragged the ballclub out of its dynasty of disappointment and gave a fresh generation of Bostonians reason to fall in love with the Red Sox anew.

"There are so many reasons you are deserving of this honor, beginning with the three world series trophies we would not have had without your contribution", Werner said.

By the way, tune in early tonight because you don't want to miss the ceremony.

"Pee-Wee ain't that nice every day, you know?"

Ortiz thanked everyone from Red Sox owners and former players, to his father in attendance, and his late mother who he said was looking over him. "It takes special people to do special things and at the end of the day have their number retired up there, so that happening to me today, it's a super honor to be up there, hanging with those guys". It's pretty far. My comment based on those numbers was, like, I started just getting behind the history of this organization.

And watched as the Red Sox unveiled Big Papi's No. 34 up on the Fenway facade.

Ortiz hit.290 with 483 home runs and 1,530 RBIs in 1,953 career games with Boston. The retirement of David Ortiz's No. 34 on Friday evening was in one way, then, typical.

"My dad has been my biggest mentor", Ortiz said.

Himself a fan favorite in New England, Edelman tweeted out a photo of the David Ortiz street sign and offered up some encouragement on Friday.
