Democrats Try To Push Nancy Pelosi Out To Win Back House Majority

On that point, Ryan agreed that the Democrats need to focus less on President Donald Trump and more on economic issues.

"On immigration, for instance, public opinion had actually become modestly more liberal in the years leading up to Trump - but the Democrats are now nearly an open-borders party, so even modest skepticism about immigration tends to push voters toward the Republicans".

Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi defended her leadership on Thursday in the face of needling from President Donald Trump and grumbling from fellow House Democrats exasperated after a high-profile special election loss.

The Georgia contest was the most expensive House race in history, and the GOP dusted off the same playbook it has used effectively since the Republican wave of 2010: Hammering Democratic candidates with a relentlessly anti-Pelosi message that drives out the conservative base.

Handel won about 52 percent of the vote to quell the upstart phenomenon of Jon Ossoff, a 30-year-old Democrat who raised more than $23 million, much of it from out of state.

She said she was anxious that the result would empower Republicans in Congress to cut Obamacare. He was backed by "a lot of liberal money from the Democrats and Pelosi", said another from the National Republican Congressional Committee.

"Nancy Pelosi is not the only reason that Ossoff lost", Vela said. A stream of TV ads played up his donations from the Bay Area, and featured a troupe of stereotypical San Francisco characters professing their love for the reedy Democrat.

Several Democratic lawmakers have said Pelosi's position as a prominent face of the Democratic Party will continue to make winning elections hard.

"If we take back the House in 2018 then I think she'd stay leader", said Rep. Ruben Gallego, D-Ariz. "I happen to have a different opinion, and I think it's important for people in my position to not be afraid to speak truth to power".

"Do you think people went to the polls and said, 'Oh my God, we've got to stop Nancy Pelosi?' I don't think so", said Rep. John Larson, D-Conn.

On Wednesday, some Democratic members of Congress publicly voiced concerns about Pelosi, raising the specter of a leadership challenge.

Rep. Seth Moulton, D-Mass., who also attended the meeting, said, "in every corner of our caucus, we're concerned".

She complained of the "vitriolic things that they say that resulted in calls to my home constantly, threats in front of my grandchildren - really, predicated on their comments and their paid ads". Rather, Trump said, "That would be very bad for the Republican Party" if Pelosi were forced out.

Do Democrats have a bigger problem than their leadership? I'm a strategic, politically astute leader.

Pelosi also incorrectly predicted that Democrats were poised to take back the House previous year, leading some of her colleagues to feel that this time around, she needs to deliver.

Pelosi's potential successors have included former Rep. Rahm Emanuel - but he left the House to become Obama's chief of staff and later to run for mayor of Chicago.

That non-answer didn't work - so some Democrats on Wednesday were going further in distancing themselves from the former speaker. "I don't know how many 'moral victories' the Democrats are going to be able to stomach before they realize it's time to actually start winning". "It's time for a new generation of leadership in the party".
