Fire safety concern to force hundreds from London homes

Fire safety concern to force hundreds from London homes”

Police said on Friday that the fire at Grenfell was started by a faulty refrigerator but quickly spread through the building due to the highly-flammable cladding, as well as tiles and insulation that failed safety tests.

More than 700 flats were evacuated in tower blocks on an estate in the Swiss Cottage region of northwest London because of fire risk concerns, after the tragic Grenfell inferno this month which gutted an entire tower.

Cllr Rachel Bailey, CEC leader, said: "This council was deeply saddened to learn of the tragic events at Grenfell Tower in west London, and joins the nation in grieving for those who lost their lives".

Meanwhile, the manufacturer of the insulation used to clad Grenfell Tower has reportedly said they will stop using the product on high-rise buildings.

Around 600 residential blocks are in the process of being checked for combustible materials.

British Prime Minister Theresa May offered a message of sympathy to the affected residents, taking to Twitter to pledge she would work with relevant authorities to offer support.

"In some cases it's possible to take mitigating action", she told Sky news.

"We will identify and investigate any criminal offence and, of course, given the deaths of so many people we are considering manslaughter, as well as criminal offences and breaches of legislation and regulations", McCormack told reporters.

Camden Council said it made a decision to evacuate the buildings on the Chalcots Estate after fire inspectors told officials that the blocks were "not safe for people to sleep in overnight". "About 100 air mattresses were provided on the floor of a local leisure center".

"Having to evacuate people from their homes is always going to be distressing for those residents, especially when we have to do it at such short notice", Gould said in a statement after the evacuation. Police on Friday said they had removed every "complete" body found in the charred remains of the tower, although forensic research would likely continue until the end of the year.

She said: "I have an epileptic child and they are telling me go to another building to find out where you can be given accommodation for tonight with specific needs".

The council has said that if people still choose to not leave their homes then it would "become a matter for the fire services".

"The Grenfell fire changes everything", said Camden Council leader Georgia Gould.

The cladding has since failed all safety checks and prompted a nationwide review of the materials used on everything from hospitals to hotels and apartment blocks. To encourage cooperation with authorities, May said the government won't penalize any fire survivors who were in the country illegally. Grenfell Tower is located in Kensington, one of the richest boroughs in Europe. Following extensive joint visits and inspections the Brigade advised that there were a number of fire safety issues in the buildings and recommended that residents should not remain in the buildings until these issues are resolved.
