Free screenings for National HIV Testing Day

Free screenings for National HIV Testing Day”

Free HIV testing will be available to the public on Tuesday at three locations in Columbia.

National HIV Testing Day is a reminder that getting tested for HIV is an important step in stopping the spread of HIV and taking care of your health. There are also community-based organizations throughout the state which offer rapid HIV testing able to give results in about 20 minutes. African-Americans are statistically more at risk than other racial groups for contracting the virus, accounting for 40percent of people diagnosed with HIV nationwide, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Since 1982, Oklahoma has had more than 10,000 HIV/AIDS cases and there are now about 6,000 people living with HIV throughout the state. The only way to know your status is to get tested. Nearly one in seven people are unaware of their HIV status. "Early treatment can help prevent serious health problems in the future". Anyone seeking testing or counseling should indicate to the registration clerks at the testing venues that they want to register for free HIV screening.

County health departments provide testing services Monday-Friday. Many people don't experience early symptoms, so testing can allow for detection and treatment so those that are positive can stay healthier, longer. No appointments are necessary.

PPSNE has 18 health centers in CT and Rhode Island that offer many preventive services including HIV and STD testing.
