'Grenfell changes everything': Shadow of high-rise fire looms across UK

'Grenfell changes everything': Shadow of high-rise fire looms across UK”

Georgia Gould added: "We realise that this is hugely distressing for everyone affected and we will be doing all we can, alongside the London Fire Brigade and other authorities, to support our residents at this hard time".

The Det. Supt. said the fridge, a Hotpoint FF175BP model, had not been subject to any product recalls in the past.

Hotpoint said on Friday that "words can not express our sorrow at this bad tragedy" and added it was working with authorities to examine the appliance.

"That's not going to fit all the four tower blocks", she said. Some refused to leave their high-rise apartments.

Officials had said earlier that samples of cladding panels from 14 buildings in London, Manchester and Plymouth had been found to be combustible.

Camden council said that residents in five blocks on the Chalcots estate would be moved, having initially announced that only 161 households in the Taplow block would be evacuated.

The council leader, Labour's Georgia Gould, said the fire service "told us they could not guarantee our residents' safety in those blocks". It said about 650 apartments were evacuated, though initial reports had said it affected as many as 800 apartments.

BuzzFeed News spoke to a number of residents who felt anxious and nervous, while some felt the evacuation was uncalled for.

The council's leader, Georgia Gould, said in a statement outside the council's offices that it would take up to four weeks to fix the blocks that were evacuated and later added in a radio interview that almost 4,000 residents were affected.

Downing Street has ordered an immediate examination of the model of refrigerator that is believed to have sparked last week's Grenfell Tower fire that killed at least 79 people.

"I don't know where we are going to go".

"I know it's hard, but Grenfell changes everything and I just don't believe we can take any risk with our residents' safety and I have to put them first", Ms Gould said.

According to the Evening Standard, the thousands of residents who were evacuated included families with newborn babies and young children and an elderly World War II veteran, whose lives are now in chaos over the sudden move.

"This feels like a sick joke", said Fuller, who was reached by phone.

May said the local authority would be given all the means necessary to make sure people had somewhere to stay. I saw it on the TV, so I packed an overnight bag.

"We anticipate that these works will be completed within three to four weeks".

"We will work with and support the emergency services and relevant authorities to safeguard the public".

Prime Minister Theresa May tweeted: "My thoughts are with residents being evacuated in Camden while their homes are made safe tonight".

One of the residents, Shirley Phillips, told Sky News she was told to leave her home with no warning and could only take some underwear, dog food and a night gown.

Ms McCormack said police were trying to determine why the fire spread so rapidly.

"We will identify and investigate any criminal offence and, of course, given the deaths of so many people we are considering manslaughter, as well as criminal offences and breaches of legislation and regulations", McCormack told reporters. "We are looking at every health and safety and fire safety offenses, and we are reviewing every company at the moment involved in the building and refurbishment of Grenfell Tower", she said. She added that the fire was so intense officials may never be able to identify everyone who died. "Some of these calls are over an hour long and truly harrowing", McCormack said.
