Jefferson County Relay for Life set for this weekend

Jefferson County Relay for Life set for this weekend”

For the past 16 years, this has been the location for the Relay For Life event which raises money to go towards Cancer research. Bake sales, garage sales, poker runs - all sorts of events throughout the year raise money for a specific team.

In your life, you've probably known five people who have had cancer.

Gil Pharand, Manager of the North Bay and District Canadian Cancer Society, says that everyone at some time has or will be touched by the disease.

The 13-hour-long fundraising event begins at 6 p.m. Friday at the Moses Lake High School track, and will involve walking or dancing or running around the track for the next 13 hours, ending on 7 a.m. Saturday, raising money with each lap they complete.

Horner said all three Eastern Panhandle counties hold relay events. One team member walks the track at all times, and participants take turns switching off whenever they wish.

Relay is one of the largest one-day fundraisers in McLean County, raising well over $250,000 previous year.

"Our goal this year is $100,000", she said.

"It's an event we have been a part of four 17 years and we are very proud to host it".

"I'm cancer-free in 2017", she said.

Bleau's daughter, Nicole Krueger, was also diagnosed with cancer in May of 2015.

Relay For Life is the signature fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. Other family members are survivors.

Today, Harrision is a cancer survivor, she said.

"From that moment on I set out seeking advice for treatment and put my goals together", said Bleau. Saturday highlights are Relay's Got Talent, a workout class, Jazzercise, a 5K run, yoga, youth lap with police officers and firefighters and EMTs, a youth area, antique auto show, and closing ceremony. "Cancer doesn't stop, so we don't stop".
