London homes evacuated on fire issues

London homes evacuated on fire issues”

The potential crisis worsened Saturday, as the United Kingdom government said that 27 residential tower blocks had failed fire safety checks carried out in the wake of the Grenfell Tower fire.

The Department for Communities and Local Government's announcement comes amid a national safety operation to identify buildings with cladding like that used on the tower block in north Kensington.

The local authority areas with buildings that failed tests include Manchester, Portsmouth, Plymouth, Hounslow, Brent and Camden.

Council leader Georgia Gould told Sky News that the decision to evacuate five tower blocks on the estate - Taplow, Burnham, Bray, Blashford and Dorney - was made at around 6.30pm on Friday.

"I've made the really, really hard decision to move the people living there into temporary accommodation while we do the urgent works to guarantee safety", Gould told reporters outside the public housing complex.

They are talking about evacuating all five blocks.

Metropolitan Police Detective Superintendent Fiona McCormack confirmed speculation the fire, which tore through the north London block last Wednesday, had started in a faulty Hotpoint freezer.

"We know it's a scary time but we will make sure that they stay safe".

Some complained of confusion as the council first announced the evacuation of one building, then expanded it to five and later reduced it to four.

Resident Michelle Urquhart says she's angry because residents were assured as late as Thursday that the problem was being addressed.

In the aftermath of the tragic fire that broke out at the Grenfell Tower, residents from over 800 homes were evacuated following inspection of fire safety norms and its compliance, reports The Guardian. "I know it's hard, but Grenfell changes everything".

Earlier yesterday, police said they were considering filing manslaughter charges in the Grenfell disaster.

"We would welcome any changes to fire safety codes, law, guidance, advice or practice that would result in improvements in fire safety in such buildings".

Twenty-four-hour fire safety patrols are already taking place at the tower blocks - Harpenmead Point, Granville Point and Templemead Point - all of which are on on Granville Road, Childs Hill.

Investigators have also found that materials used on Grenfell Tower's exterior failed safety tests.

CEC has reviewed its own buildings stock and has found that no properties have been identified as having the type of cladding that has been implicated in the Grenfell Tower blaze on June 14.

UK Prime Minister Theresa May apologized to the Grenfell Tower residents for the lack of support they received in the initial aftermath of the fire and promised to do more to help.

CEP Architectural Facades said in a statement: "Individually, these materials can be integrated into a safe cladding system but certainly we recommend that in high-rise buildings class 0 rainscreen panels should only be used in conjunction with a non-combustible insulation material such as mineral fibre".
