McAuliffe votes in Virginia's primary election

McAuliffe votes in Virginia's primary election”

Perriello is touting his progressive credentials and has the support of the Vermont senator as well as Massachusetts Sen.

Mr. Northam, who has the support of Gov. Terry McAuliffe, as well as Sens.

Northam, who grew up on the Eastern Shore and lives in Norfolk, won by outperforming Perriello in Hampton Roads, Richmond and Northern Virginia.

Although he received a large amount of attention and praise from prominent national Democrats, Perriello was ultimately unable to expand the universe of Democratic primary voters enough to counter Northam's advantages.

"I don't know about you, but I'm inspired to keep fighting tonight", Perriello said.

Gillespie's tight victory over Prince William County Board of Supervisors chair Corey Stewart came as a major surprise.

Unofficial results from the GOP primary, with 99.7 percent of districts reporting, were Gillespie, 159,600 (43.7 percent); Stewart, 155,255 (42.5 percent); and Virginia Beach state Sen.

"I do feel it's important for people to understand that we are there to serve the objective of the commonwealth and to serve our citizens, not for any personal gain, and I don't want anyone having any doubts about that", Gillespie said.

With almost all the votes counted and most of what's remaining being from safe Gillespie territory, it's clear the former RNC chair has won the nomination by a few thousand votes. Gillespie rarely mentioned Trump and aired commercials that showed he was an adviser to former President George W. Bush.

Northam will face Ed Gillespie in the general election.

But it's unclear how much Stewart supporters will rally behind Gillespie.

Despite their varying approaches, months on the trail have revealed two candidates as more alike than not.

As Virginia voters go to the polls today to pick their nominees for governor, President Trump has cast a shadow over both parties' primaries in very different ways.

Virginia is one of only two states electing new governors this year, and the swing-state contest is likely to draw intense national scrutiny for signs of how voters are reacting to Trump's first year in office.

The turnout in the Democratic primary far exceeded the last one in 2009, when about 320,000 people voted.

The state of Virginia chose its Republican and Democratic candidates Tuesday to replace outgoing Gov. Virginia doesn't allow same-day registration. Tim Kaine have stuck by the lieutenant governor, whom all three have known and served with for a long time. Northam, a pediatric neurologist and Army veteran, emphasized his pragmatic approach and ability to work with Republicans.

Republican candidate Corey Stewart with his hateful rhetoric and his flag. New Jersey is the only other state electing a governor this year.

To Joshua Butler, 32, who came to a Perriello town hall in Leesburg last week, the candidate's progressive credentials and big-name endorsers were critical.

Among the many issues Gillespie has strategized, he has most notably outlined a 15-point plan: FAITH in Our Government for ALL Virginians.

The GOP candidates for lieutenant governor are state senators Jill Holzmann Vogel and Bryce Reeves and Del. "Warren and Bernie support, I'm all for", Butler said.

Northam accumulated those chits during a decade in Democratic politics, starting with his election to the Virginia Senate in 2007.

Progressive-backed Perriello raised $1.7 million as of April, and Northam earned $1.4 million, although it should be noted that he was unable to accept campaign donations during the state's legislative session this spring. He's accused Gillespie of trying to mislead voters with unrealistic promises to cut taxes as governor, while calling for a gas tax increase himself to pay for transportation projects.

"We have an incredible slate of diverse candidates", rising second-year College student Virginia Chambers, University Democrats spokesperson, said.

"All I am going to do is put forward ideas that will get Virginia going again", Gillespie said.
