Midnight deadline to discuss players, deals for expansion draft — Vegas GM

Midnight deadline to discuss players, deals for expansion draft — Vegas GM”

And that was before McPhee learned of the high-profile group of players hell have to choose from — limited to one from each of the 30 teams — in stocking the Golden Knights roster before submitting his list on Wednesday.

The Predators were put in a bind in when exposing Neal, a 10-time 20-goal-scorer, because they elected to protect a fourth defenseman. The fifth-year player, however, won't be ready for the start of the season after having surgery to fix a shoulder injury.

Washington isn't the only team that might see a talented player plucked from its roster for nothing. Other notable Nashville players unprotected were forwards Pontus Aberg and Colton Sissons. Vegas could look at Boston's Colin Miller (24), Edmonton's Griffin Reinhart (23) and Buffalo's Zach Bogosian (26).

Some teams went four forwards, four defenseman, and one goaltender.

General manager George McPhee knows transforming the expansion Vegas Golden Knights swiftly into a Stanley Cup contender will be nothing short of a David Blaine magic act. Rules of that nature will make it easier for the team to collect a cache of draft picks before they ever play a single game.

It is so complicated, in fact, that McPhee plans to run his selections by the National Hockey League on Tuesday night to make sure they meet the requirements.

Those deals won't be formally revealed until Wednesday. It could get interesting if McPhee say Vatanen as a trade chip and Murray was able to promote the fact that Vatanen had value outside of simply being an on-ice player for Vegas next season. "Every team is this league has a chance to protect their roster".

The Penguins also might have bought out Fleury's contract, but that would have left them with a salary cap penalty of nearly $3 million per year for the next four seasons. He's got one year left on his deal with a modest $1 million USA cap hit. There's also a surplus of young goaltending talent, including Detroit's Petr Mrazek, Washington's Philipp Grubauer, the Rangers' Raanta and Colorado's Calvin Pickard.

National Hockey League teams had two options for putting together their protected lists for the draft: either protect a goalie and eight skaters, or a goalie, seven forwards and three defensemen. There's plenty to discuss as we prepare for the expansion draft, NHL Awards and NHL Draft, so fire away with all questions.

Behind closed doors, the Golden Knights are starting to take shape.

Chayka was exaggerating, but only slightly. Even if the Golden Knights don't sign any unrestricted free agents by Wednesday night, this serves as a sort of first negotiating advantage for them before the first day of free agency on July 1.

That doesn't mean the other GMs can't talk.

“Whatever you want to give us has to be better than what we can claim from that club, ” McPhee said in Las Vegas on Sunday.

However, Garth Snow appeared to have something else up his sleeve, as reports surfaced Sunday that the veteran general manager made a side deal with Vegas, agreeing to send a first-round pick to the Golden Knights to make sure they steer clear of other Islanders in the draft, presumably de Haan, Nelson, and Strome.

A handful of big names are already available to Vegas as the team's pick announcements near, and a flurry of ripple-effect trades and signings could be coming as well.

“Everybodys going to have conversations, ” Brad Treliving of the Calgary Flames said.

Only players with more than two years of pro experience needed to be protected, so the Bruins didn't have to protect young defensemen Charlie McAvoy and Brandon Carlo.

"We've got another office in there preparing for the entry draft", McPhee said. "Having the ability to have a spot to protect someone, if all the other boxes were checked, there certainly was an advantage".

In recent years, the extremists have become even more brazen, attacking sites frequented by Westerners.

"It was a rigid market", Treliving said. And as most expansion teams have proved over the years, those guys usually end up showing everyone was actually right about them. Enstrom's Sweden-based agent, Kalle Boden, said in an email that his client waived his no-move as a favor to the Jets and "wants to stay" in Winnipeg. McPhee can also negotiate deals with teams to not pick certain players, although there will certainly be a price tag attached.
