Mourinho accused of tax evasion

Mourinho accused of tax evasion”

Mourinho, now the Manchester United manager, led Inter to a Serie A, Coppa Italia and Champions League treble in 2009-10 before assuming control at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Spanish prosecutors said on Tuesday that they had filed the claim against Mourinho on two counts of tax fraud from 2011 and 2012.

Last week, Cristiano Ronaldo was accused by prosecutors in Spain of defrauding Spanish authorities of $16.4 million in tax between 2011 and 2014.

"To this date, neither the Spanish tax authorities, nor the public prosecutor have contacted Jose Mourinho or his advisers who were hired for the inspection process", read a statement from his representatives.

Madrid's regional state prosecutor has alleged the Portugal player "intentionally" did not declare income of €28.4m related to image rights, and declared €11.5m of earnings from 2011-14 when his real income was nearly €43m.

According to media reports Ronaldo is unsettled at Madrid because he believes Real did not back him as fully as he had hoped in his dispute with the taxman.

A statement released on his behalf said he "has not received any notification". He is under official investigation and will have to appear in the Pozuelo de Alarcon court No. 1 on July 31.

In Ronaldo's case, the former Manchester United winger is accused of having diverted some €150m of advertising revenue through a shell company in the British Virgin Islands.

"From now on it will be the judge in charge of the case who will take the necessary steps to determine the possible responsibilities of Mr Mourinho".

The 54-year-old is yet to comment on the accusation.

Under Spanish law, a first-time offender is not required to serve time in jail for a sentence below two years.

Barcelona footballer Lionel Messi was given a 21-month sentence previous year, which he is unlikely to serve, for having defrauded the national purse of 4.1 million euros of undeclared image rights earnings.
