Palestinians shot dead for Israeli police stabbing were not IS, says Hamas

Untold in the headline, is the fact that the 3 dead Palestinians had carried out the stabbing and shooting attacks on Israeli officers (which killed a female Israeli officer) in the Old City in Jerusalem.

According to police, two of the assailants opened fire at a group of police officers who returned fire, and a third stabbed the policewoman. "3 Arab terrorists shot by police units that responded at the scene", he added.

"I have instructed the police to reinforce security arrangements and checking procedures in the plaza around Damascus Gate", Netanyahu said at a weekly cabinet meeting, explaining that he was consdiering making the zone a "sterile area".

At least three other people were injured in the attacks, two of them Palestinian bystanders who were hit by gunfire, Israeli newspaper Haaretz reports.

More than 240 Palestinians - majority attackers, Israel says - have also been killed in that period.

The month of Ramadan is seen as a particularly tense period in the West Bank and Israel.

Following the deadly attack, Israel immediately ramped up punitive measures, rescinding more than 250,000 permits allowing Palestinians to enter Jerusalem for Ramadan celebrations.

The PFLP said its two attackers, 19-year-old Osama Ata and 18-year-old Baraa Ata, were members of the same clan who both spend time in Israeli prisons.

Seconds later, a second attack took place when a third Palestinian repeatedly stabbed policewoman Hadas Malka with a knife.

It was the latest bloodshed in a wave of Palestinian attacks on civilians and soldiers that erupted in 2015.

The three men were armed with an automatic weapon and knives and carried out near simultaneous attacks at two locations.

But Hamas, the Palestinian Islamist group that runs the Gaza Strip, dismissed the claim, saying the attackers had come from among its own ranks and the leftist Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine.

In an effort to limit the threat of violence, Israel also banned access to al-Aqsa for all men under 40 on Friday, the Muslim holy day.

Aida Touma-Suleiman, a Palestinian citizen of Israel and member of the Knesset's Joint List, told Mondoweiss that she considered the revocations a form of "collective punishment" and said she planned to introduce a suggestion to have a "special discussion on the issue".

ISIS has claimed its jihadists were behind a shooting and stabbing terror attack which killed an Israeli policewoman.

Israeli police said on Friday all the assailants were from Palestinian cities in the occupied West Bank.

Following the attack, the Israeli army raided Deir Abu Mashal, the village near Ramallah the three perpetrators hailed from, sealing off its entrances and mapping out the homes of the three for demolition.

Israel blames the Palestinian leadership for inciting the violence.
