Police officer's lynching 'marks new low' in J&K: Rahul Gandhi

Reacting to the lynching incident of a senior police officer here, the Congress leader said that it marks a "new low" in the border state which has been facing a new wave of violence for nearly a year now.

"When the tourist season is at the peak in the valley and the holy Amarnath Yatra is going to start soon, a handful of people are indulging in such acts to convey the outside world that Kashmir is not a place to visit", the leader said. "I want to tell people, if this goes on, things may well go back to how they were, when people would run just upon seeing a (police) jeep on the road", Mehbooba said, according to ANI.

Witnesses said worshippers had spotted the policeman, Mohammed Ayub Pandit, at the mosque in plainclothes, taking photographs of people leaving shortly after midnight.

While two persons were arrested yesterday, three more have been picked up since.

Earlier, police sources said that Pandit was seen moving around by people near Jamia Masjid in Nowhatta area at 3 am.

He also said that two among the involved persons in the lynching of a senior cop has been arrested. Nowhatta, where the lynching took place, falls under the jurisdiction of the SP, North Srinagar.

One report said that he had been stripped before he was murdered. "Only then can we say what happened", he said.

Sajad Ahmad Shah, the additional SP (Traffic City), Srinagar, will look after the duties of the SP (North Srinagar), the order read.

Meanwhile, chief minister Mehbooba Mufti called on Governor N N Vohra at the Raj Bhavan and discussed continued attacks on police personnel in the valley, following the lynching of the police officer.

He said Mehbooba and Vohra discussed the measures to be taken to support the families of those personnel who lay down their lives in the line of duty.

Referring to a query, DGP said, "As far my information, the slain police officer had a pistol and he has a right to self defense".

The BJP today demanded the setting up of a special fast-track court to punish the those involved in the brutal lynching of a police officer in Srinagar.
