Red Sox claim Fister off waivers, and he will start Sunday”

With Boston's pitching injuries, specifically to Eduardo Rodriguez, he may have a better shot of pitching in the majors for the Red Sox.

Boston Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski, perhaps trying to recapture a little of the magic pitcher Doug Fister provided the Detroit Tigers in 2011, claimed the former Golden Valley High School and Fresno State product off waivers Friday. But, with an offer to become a member of the Red Sox' 40-man roster, expect Fister to insert himself into the rotation, at least for the time being. The sinkerballer can also earn up to $1 million in incentives as a starter, and $200 as a reliever. Manager John Farrell said Fister is slated to make his first start in Sunday's series finale against the Los Angeles Angels. He turned in 2 1/2 solid seasons with Detroit under Dombrowski before having a career year with Washington in 2014, going 16-6 with a 2.41 ERA. He spent the entire 2016 season with the Houston Astros, making 32 starts and going 12-13 with a 4.64 ERA. Another possibility is using him as a reliever, a role he had for 10 games in 2015 (2.12 ERA).
