Sanders 'sickened,' shooter possibly linked to 2016 campaign

Sanders 'sickened,' shooter possibly linked to 2016 campaign”

The 66-year-old IL man who opened fire early Wednesday on members of Congress practicing for a charity baseball game, raged against President Trump and once singled out House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, who was wounded in the attack.

66-year-old Hodgkinson had been staying in Virginia since earlier this year, but was a longtime resident of Belleville, Illinois.

Over the years, Hodgkinson has had multiple scrapes with local police and disputes with neighbors and his daughter, records show.

Records show that the 2006 battery case, which resulted in his arrest, was later dismissed after a period of "supervision".

Hodgkinson owned a home inspection business, which he dissolved on January 10, according to Secretary of State corporate records.

Mr Walsh said Hodgkinson once worked as a home builder and later had a home inspection business until a year ago. Orear said he had no idea that Hodgkinson would be involved in something like a shooting. "Had we any indication that Mr. Hodgkinson posed a threat to anyone's safety, we would have taken the appropriate steps to alert U.S. Capitol Police immediately". We never interacted with him.

"He dragged himself, after he was shot, from near second base about 10 or 15 yards into the field, just to be I think a little further away from the gunman; but he was laying motionless out there", Flake said.

"The only thing I was concerned about was that it was such a high-powered gun, and that somebody could possibly get hurt".

Federal officials told NBC News that he left IL for the Alexandria area several weeks ago, and they continue to investigate both that move as well as a motive for the shooting.

The man suspected of shooting a congressman and others at a congressional baseball practice is from IL.

He says that Hodgkinson was called "Tommy".

Lobstein said, "I hope that people can forgive him, but don't forget it". He thought about asking a staffer about the man but never did, he said.

"I think it's a sad state of affairs for people to exploit a tragedy like this for their own political ends", he said.

Hodgkinson's license expired in November 2016 and was not renewed. The sheriff received a phone call reporting about 50 shots "in the pine trees" in a lightly populated area near Belleville. Spokesman George O'Connor described them as "negative in nature on a variety of legislative issues, but not threatening". He attended Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville.

Dale Walsh, 65, of Belleville, said he was a lifelong friend of Hodgkinson's.

His domestic violence charges were dismissed, according to court records cited by the Daily Beast, but the friend said that Hodgkinson's foster daughter told her "a lot of stories that he was really bad to her" and that she said Hodgkinson was "always angry".

"He was the type of person that if you challenged him, he wouldn't back off".
