Saudi foils terror attack on Mecca's grand mosque

Saudi foils terror attack on Mecca's grand mosque”

Security forces also apprehended five of the accused, including a woman, while further investigation is underway.

No Malaysians were involved in Friday's suicide bombing in Mecca, said the Foreign Ministry on Saturday. The blast demolished the building, its walls crushing a parked vehicle. What appeared to be shrapnel and bullet holes peppered nearby structures.

Interior Ministry security spokesman Mansour al-Turki said four had already been released from the hospital.

In a video published on YouTube, militants from the group reportedly said: "Muslim brothers in Europe who can't reach the Islamic State lands, attack them in their homes, their markets, their roads and their forums".

No group has claimed responsibility for the incident.

Barton added: "It's supposed to be a time for peace, reconciling with family and friends, and asking for forgiveness but for IS, in this kind of perverse way, it's an even better time to launch a terror attack". He was deposed as Crown Prince and interior minister on Wednesday.

Saudi Arabia and its allies severed all ties with Qatar earlier this month accusing it of supporting "terrorist groups" in the region, a charge Doha denies. Qatar long has denied those allegations.

Four people died in an explosion near the end of Ramadan previous year in the city of Medina close to Islam's second holiest site, the prophet's mosque.

Most assaults have targeted the country's Shia minority and security forces.

Saudi Arabia has suffered a string of terror attacks in recent years, as well as thwarting a number of alleged plots.

The foiled attack targetted worshipers at the mosque, it said. The Saudi monarch bears the title of "custodian of the two holy mosques".

In 1979, some 500 fundamentalists Muslims armed with machine guns hidden under their robe seized the mosque for two weeks. When Saudi troops stormed the mosque, the official death toll was 229, including extremists and soldiers.
