Simona Halep won't have an easy time getting over this loss

Simona Halep won't have an easy time getting over this loss”

Halep seemingly regained control, breaking in the final set to earn a 3-1 lead, only to lose serve in the next game after missing on three chances for a 4-0 lead.

With 20 years, no experience in the finals, and especially in the Grand Slam finals, her result and achievement is much greater than anyone thinks.

In retrospect, we should have seen her 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 win against No. 3 and tournament favorite Simona Halep coming. She also denied Halep what would have been her first major championship and the No. 1 ranking.

In the final match, Ostapenko won another important title - the first unseeded woman to win at Roland Garros since 1933. "I have no words", said an ecstatic Ostapenko.

Two years later, in 2009, she would win the Open 10-12 in the 12-year-old category, at the Tennis Club de Boulogne Billancourt, a stone's throw from Roland Garros, joining Amelie Mauresmo and Justine Henin on the list of winners. Three years ago was something new, so now I know.

"I still can not believe it - it was my dream and it has come true".

In press conference Ostapenko revealed what she thought when she was down: "'I'm already in the final and I'm playing such a great player as Simona", the Latvian said.

Before this competition started, nobody saw her among on the probable quarter-finalists and let alone as a victor. "So if I can reduce them, I think will be helpful".

"I felt like a spectator out there at times", Halep, who had points to lead 4-0 in the second set and was also 3-1 ahead in the decider, said after her second runner-up finish here.

"That was a devastating loss", said NBC commentator John McEnroe after Halep fell to 0-2 in French Open finals.

As she improbably took the title, Ostapenko's aggressive style of play further endeared her to the Roland Garros crowd. "There were a couple of deciding games and the match turned in the other way", she added.

"I was trying to enjoy the match and fight for every point", Ostapenko said.

Ostapenko didn't start well, losing the first set 4-6 and was behind 0-3 to Halep in the second.

But Ostapenko then got broken just as rapidly in the next game. And Ostapenko was quick to admit that there is more improvement to come.

An ultra-aggressive style again reaped rewards for the 20-year-old Latvian, whose respective victor and unforced error tallies (54 and 54) dwarfed the respective numbers of her opponent (eight and 10).

"But not many players win their first final in a grand slam". She also had never before won a tour-level title of any sort.

She has stunned 2014 finalist #Halep 4-6 6-4 6-3 to win her maiden Grand Slam title!

The victor Saturday will be a first-time Grand Slam champion.

- The youngster launched an impressive tally of 299 winners from her fluorescent green racket at Roland Garros this year.
