Springfield Mayor Dismisses Proposed Connecticut Casino As 'Glorified Slots Parlor'

The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan yesterday ruled that a lower court judge was correct in tossing MGM's suit against the Nutmeg State previous year.

Earlier this week, the court of appeals agreed with the CT court and once again dismissed MGM's lawsuit which claimed that CT provided MMCT with special favors including allowing them to develop a third casino on non-tribal land.

The tribes' partnership, MMCT, would gain a new franchise in the East Windsor location, the state's first commercial casino. It is created to lure Hartford-area gamers who may otherwise have made the slightly longer drive to Springfield to play at MGM.

The tribes say the $7 billion they've paid the state in revenue sharing, combined with payments going forward, have in effect covered the the expansion rights. The company has expressed an interest in building a casino in southwestern CT, but had not settled on a specific location or made a formal proposal.

MGM lawyers said the casino giant was improperly disadvantaged by the law, but the appeals court said the argument was "too speculative".

Following a federal appeals court ruling, the mayor of Springfield, Massachusetts is downplaying the threat of competition for the MGM casino under construction in his city.

In the end the tribes won the high-stakes battle, but Uri Clinton, senior vice president and legal counsel for MGM Resorts International, has promised to sue. "This in itself will quell any potential competition of a glorified slots parlor in a neighboring state", Sarno wrote.

MGM Springfield is expected to open its doors in the fall of 2018. Experts like Arthur Wolf, constitutional law professor at Western New England University stated that once the ct governor signs off on the East Windsor casino, MGM Resorts would have a much better chance in pursuing successful legal action against ct.
