TCU gets back at Florida, forces deciding game at CWS

TCU gets back at Florida, forces deciding game at CWS”

Despite a hot start from starting pitcher Jackson Kowar, the Florida baseball team couldn't keep up with TCU Friday night, losing 9-2 to the Horned Frogs.

Quote of Note: "As I said the first day here, the best quality that our team has is just their presence, their experience, their poise under pressure".

The victor advances to the best-of-three championship series on Monday against LSU or Oregon State, who play at 2 p.m. Saturday.

What's important is this: If TCU or LSU win on Friday, there's baseball to be played Saturday at TD Ameritrade Park.

Louisville failed to win multiple games at the CWS for the fourth time.

"Oregon State is a very formidable opponent", LSU coach Paul Mainieri said, per Bill Franques of LSUSports.Net.

Skoug's double with two outs in the sixth inning cleared the bases for an 8-2 lead and gave him 71 RBIs in for the season and 168 for his career. "I felt really good about - Wade, when he's hitting the ball the other way, like he said, staying on the baseball, he's as good a hitter as there is out there". "I mean, this is my third trip here, and we haven't sealed the deal yet". He finished with four runs, on three hits, while striking out two.

"I think the anticipation of getting out here, the first game you go 0-for-4, and the second game you're 0-for-3 with a walk, now you're 0-for-7 and next thing you're 0-for-10 with two walks". But he also allowed six hits, three of which for extra bases, which plated four earned runs. The Horned Frogs made the plays, got the breaks and took advantage of their scoring opportunities when they had to.

Charles King (1-3) pitched 3 1/3 innings of one-hit shutout relief after taking over for starter Mitchell Traver with two outs in the fourth. He was the first coach ejected in a College World Series game since Cal State Fullerton's George Horton on June 18, 2007.

"Confidence is a great thing, and it's good to have those two guys in particular feeling good about themselves going into tomorrow facing such a great pitcher", TCU coach Jim Schlossnagle said.

But now Florida needs to find a way to jumpstart its own offense in a rematch with TCU ace Jared Janczak.

For sure, the Tigers loosened up in a 7-4 victory to eliminate Florida State on Wednesday.

Logan Shore, a second-round draft pick in 2016, lasted five innings in last year's CWS opener - while the eventual most outstanding player, Coastal Carolina's Andrew Beckwith, hurled a complete game.

Garrett Milchin took over for Kowar on the mound to begin the frame and sandwiched walks around Watson's one-out single to again fill the bases.

TCU led 2-0 in the third inning on back-to-back doubles from Wade and Humphreys.

So, yeah, Faedo and Singer have met catcher Mike Rivera's standard.

In his only trip to Omaha, the No. 4 pick in the 2017 Major League Baseball draft hit a modest 4-for-13 in three games with one home run and three runs scored.

Florida entered having allowed one run in two games in the CWS.

LSU opened the second inning with a double and two singles and led 2-0 when Beau Jordan's safety-squeeze bunt scored Zach Watson.

UL put the tying run on in both the eighth and ninth, but could plate the equalizer. Milchin departed with the bases loaded in favor of Frank Rubio, who induced an RBI groundout before walking the bases back loaded.

TCU improves to 49-17 and moves on to play Florida tonight. 1 through 3 hitters struggling.
