Things to Know About the Virginia Governor Primary”

Stewart - who served as Donald Trump's campaign chairman in Virginia - got 155,743 votes (42.5 percent) to the 160,060 votes (43.7 percent) cast for establishment Republican Ed Gillespie, a former chairman of the Republican National Committee. While Gillespie had his stronghold in Fairfax County, Stewart scored big in Loudon County, Prince William County as well as rural central and southwest regions of the state.

State Senator Frank Wagner is the only sitting office-holder running in the Republican primary.

On the Republican side, frontrunner Ed Gillespie, a moderate Washington insider, is trying to fend off under-funded but spirited campaigns from avid Trump supporter Corey Stewart and state Sen. Trump's approval rating in Virginia, in public and private polls, is now about 35 percent, creating headwinds for Gillespie and other Republicans.

The close results shocked many political watchers and shows Trump's enduring appeal among Republican voters, as well as a party still facing significant internal strife between its establishment and anti-establishment wings. Mark Warner in 2014.

"Are we ready to win in November?"

"Virginia's economy has been suffering for too long. Are we ready to win back the House of Delegates this year?" he shouted to loud cheers. "We agreed that we're going to bring all Democrats under the tent starting tonight".

Northam had been essentially campaigning for years, making key contacts with influential power brokers like prominent African-American politicians and religious leaders, and building up a large cash advantage that let him outspend Perriello on TV advertising in the closing weeks of the race. "If you look at the data, it's clear: We are stuck, and we have got to get unstuck, and doing the same thing we've been doing is not going to increase our opportunities, or create jobs".

"His agenda and Repulicans in Congress scare me, so very motivating for me to be out", Democratic voter Ray Crittenden said. "All the national money and national attention will be coming this way".

Rob Manch is up in Arlington, Virginia, at the watch party for Northam, who's received endorsements from U.S. Sens.

The race has been framed as a reboot of the Bernie Sanders-Hillary Clinton contest, but the comparison is not a ideal fit. Having ceded the White House to Donald Trump, Democrats are now looking for ways to capitalize on the Russia-sized "cloud" hanging over his presidency. That spike didn't materialize.

The Washington Post officially called the race with 99 percent of the precincts reporting.

Acknowledging his campaign had been outspent by over $3 million, Perriello said the result showed the strength of "people-powered politics". Still, Perriello touted his good relations with the popular former president, using video from the old re-election rally in a series of ads. Looking at county-level maps of the two races, Perriello's campaign manager, Brennan Gilmore, noted that his candidate-whose old congressional district included a rural area around Charlottesville-won numerous same interior counties as Stewart. He'll aim to continue a Democratic winning streak in statewide races since 2009.

While Virginia Democrats are tasked with deciding who will earn the party's nomination in a neck-in-neck race, the candidates are test-running a blue-on-blue game plan that might pave the way for future candidates heading into the 2018 midterms and even the 2020 election.

Virginia's lieutenant governor will face a former Republican national committee chairman in a November general election to become the state's next governor in a race seen as a bellwether for next year's mid-term congressional races.
