Tony Awards: Donald Trump targeted at Kevin Spacey-hosted show

Tony Awards: Donald Trump targeted at Kevin Spacey-hosted show”

The melody came from the night's big victor "Dear Evan Hansen", the musical about adolescent angst, the aftermath of suicide and power of social media captured the imagination of Tony voters.

Two graduates of the Miami arts high school that the Florida Legislature threatened to defund this spring won Tony Awards Sunday night at Radio City Musical Hall for their work on Broadway. That provided a nice showcase for the musical and the meteoric success story of star Ben Platt, who capped a huge Broadway debut with a Tony win on his first at-bat. The show's writer, Steven Levenson, won for best book of a musical, and Alex Lacamoire earned one for best orchestrations (after winning past year for "Hamilton.") And Rachel Bay Jones won her first Tony - featured actress - for her heartbreaking portrayal of a mother who struggles to understand and help her son, Evan, as he gets caught in a bad lie that he can not control. Unlike twelve months ago when "Hamilton" nearly swept the board, this year's Tonys were more even-handed.

Later in the speech, Midler spoke about the Hello, Dolly! in its current form and how it fits in to the current political climate - the musical was nominated for 10 awards and won the award for Best Musical Revival.

This was the first time that the only award won by a musical was Best Director.

One of its performers, Michael Aronov, won Best Featured Actor In A Play for his role as a cocky Israeli negotiator. After a year away, the Tony Awards returned to their traditional venue at Radio City Music Hall in NY. She refused to be played off, silencing the orchestra as the crowd roared.

'Hello, Dolly!' won four Tonys, including best musical revival. I'm honored to say to our veterans, on behalf of Joe, myself, the company of "Bandstand' and everybody here tonight, we've got your six". Kevin's featured Dear Evan Hansen to start and went into such musicals as Groundhog Day and Natasha Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812.

The show was hosted by "House of Cards" star Kevin Spacey. Dear Evan Hansen took home Best New Musical, while Come From Away, which was neck-in-neck for the big prize, got Best Direction of a Musical. It's not that she just kept going, she stopped her speech for about 1/2 a second, and said, "Shut that crap off!"

Along with Jonah, Platt's mom and dad were also in attendance at the Tony Awards.

Thanking everyone including her makeup artist for making her look about '30 years younger, ' the 71-year-old was her usual witty self, dropping a few punchlines along the way.
